I think another factor has to be audience age range, no one under 21 is buying a cd and if they are it’s because they still have their parents cd player or old car 😅

I answered "I don't have enough of a fanbase..." but the truth is I'm a film and tv composer and for some of those works it wasn't up to me (work for hire) and others it wasn't worth it. But I intend to release a Vinyl edition and/or CDs for a concept album.

I'm a professional musician I play for a living. Classical accompanying, church, musical theatre, and teaching. I've made a couple albums but it's just a pipe dream. I bought a few hundred copies of cds to sell years ago and I still have most of them. My dream is to sell my own music but it seems like a pipe dream at this point. Life is funny like that. I wanted to be a rockstar and now I'm a pro musician, but I ain't no rockstar. It hurts but deep down I know I just should be grateful. I get to play music. But I can't hang in this digital world. Props to you for doing it tho.

You are missing out on ancillary revenue (mostly at shows) if you are not selling physical media. Especially vinyl. Also, make sure to get your record additionally mastered for vinyl, as the process is different.

The German tax office then classifies me as a seller of goods, which complicates a lot of things just for a few CDs... 🙄

It’s coming :). Physical media on the way. I did not know it took months to print Vinyl btw 😂

The reason is i don’t know how to build the right ads funnel to get sales 😅

It's a combination of the first two, but even if I had the fanbase, I still don't know if I would. Making CDs, cassettes, or vinyl records ultimately just contributes to waste and has slim profit margins compared to digital sales. Even merch is tough, because I would only want to sell merch if it were made as ethically and environmentally friendly as possible, as not to contribute to the harmful fast fashion industry. Maybe I'd do very limited runs of physical media to limit potential waste, but it's all hypothetical at this point.

I feel like it would take so much effort and time for little money compared to streaming. My streaming is good with over 4M organic streams everymonth, great passive income, although, all these listeners I have on Youtube music and spotify are not following me on social so I feel like I’d only sale for about 300$ per month and it would cost me so much time. Seems like I’m better off making music and shows!

Soon I will press vinyl knowing about 90/100 will remain in my closet…it’s simply for bucket list and legacy.

It’s too expensive. Even if I were to do it for fun and take a bit of a loss 20 cassettes cost like $300 if i don’t duplicate them myself. Don’t get me started on buying a duplicator.

Been thinking about it, had some occasional questions from fans about it. But I am not sure if the time investment is worth it in my current state. I am focusing more on building my own membership / newsletter / patreon - ish site instead.

If I don't have a CD player in my vehicle, and vehicles are using Bluetooth and streaming devices, well then that answers the question. Stepping backwards for profit over how society consumes music now would be dumb

Love to get some stuff on vinyl but would be just for me. No fan base

Music artists / labels: for those of you that do NOT sell your music on physical media formats, why don't you?
