Kashi musings 1/7 … 🙏🏽 Since 2010, I have come here innumerable times for various reasons.

The first trip was to make a documentary - which did happen in 2011. It is available on YouTube under the name “Kashi - the Eternal City”.

Since then, Kashi has enslaved me to make periodic visits, sometimes even beyond my own reasons and purposes.

This visit was also not planned.. actually I wanted to not travel anywhere and rest for a week before another trip. But Mahadev calls and you cannot not obey!!! Somebody graciously arranged the trip - and here I am.

Kashi is not about the places I visit. It’s an experience.. there is an inner beautiful experience. And an outer experience of noise, pollution, beauty, food and many other aspects.

Beyond all this lies a realm which is indescribable.

I have captured many videos during the last few trips. My challenge has always been to articulate it. Hope it manifests in the coming months. Har Har Mahadev!!!

Gently rocking boat resonates with joy Along with the small waves left by a wake Lapping incessantly against a wooden hull Western sky turned a deep hue of saffron Against the silhouette of a hundred temples All of them ancient still alive in old Banares Millennias have passed as mute witness Like spectators by the mighty flowing waters Seen rise and fall of dynasties and empires Many who trudged to built the many ghats That lined up as far as the eyes could see All eighty of them from Varana to Assi ghat Jostling for the attention of a million devotees Those that visited these venerated edifices Some for rites of parents long gone away Others who believe that sins could wash away Just with the murmur of sanskrit shlokas In the holy waters from the gangotri glacier The bend in the river crescent moon like Enmeshed in the dreadlocks of Vishwanatha Cold breeze blows across waters that reflected a million dancing lights The evening stars appears overhead as the twilight slips in unnoticed Multitude tinkling in all its glory as if competing with the Ganga Aarti Steps by the water's edge now alive and buzzing with activities Swarthy men held multilayered lamps ablaze in flickering flames Moving them in mesmerizing orbits round & round Spell bound devotee held in a trance moment Devotional fevour reaches it high cresendo While the Ganges slowly flows by the ghats Carrying with the waters a few bright diyas Set afloat by the kith & kin of departed souls Soon the rush of the crowds dissipate quietly Leaving just the burning pyres of Manikarnika And the souls awaiting for their moksha Ranjit Narayanan February 2024
