Do you lock your suitcase before checking it in at the airport?

I refuse to participate in the fight for the overhead bin. I check my luggage. In 52 years of flying in North America and Europe, my luggage hasn’t kept up with me perhaps 5 times, out of about 500 flights. No ‘lost luggage’, always caught up with me within 24 hours.

I don’t check my luggage. But if I unfortunately end up being gate checked, I still don’t mess with locking it. The only thing I keep in it are my clothes - plain clothes and nothing of value. If somebody really wants to break into it, they will regardless if it’s locked or not.

No lock, but always a belt around my suitcase to keep it from opening by accident, as well as making it uniquely identifiable.

Just a simple key lock to keep my luggage from opening by accident.

This year i got myself a cheap stretchy cover and covered it in sew on badges of the flags of countries id travelled too, before then i just used a strap to make my case stick out from all the 'òther' blue suitcases, id also written all the places id been all over my case, and luggage handlers also wrote place names on my case, i noticed when i got home. Everyone liked seeing all the badges😂

Yes, because it's one extra way to hope it doesn't break open

Thiefs do have wire/bolt cutters. But i consider cable ties as well.

A lock will only stop an honest thief.

Traveling for 30 years never locked our suitcases and nothing stolen.

I use a ziptie rather than a lock... it's never been opened by anyone since I started it 10 years ago. 😮😮

@rickchollett

I have one of the "TSA locks" that they can unlock with their universal key.

@ccchic2

I’m scared of forgetting the combination or the lock breaking or something. I just don’t check anything valuable.

Well I don't check my bags anymore but I do put a lock on my carryon if I'm on a seriously long flight and I expect to sleep. Do that just before I stand in line to board

I tried to lock it about 3 years ago. When I opened my unlocked suitcase, I found a baggie with my cut off lock, and a printed note in it telling me why it was cut off, and “we’re not allowed to lock our suitcases with just any lock anymore. Needs to be the universal type the TSA can open”. I no longer lock. If anyone wants my clothes & shoes, have at it.

I don’t check bags, and I keep my bags with me. My valuables stay on my person.

@kimgrod

If they’re gonna break into it, they’re gonna break into it.

I sometimes use a zip tie or even a rubber band. The last time I travelled I didn't bother at all. It's only clothes in the case anyway. Got stopped once at Detroit Airport with the lady with a sniffer dog..... nearly shit myself.....wife explained to her that one of our cats had been sleeping in it the night before...she said the look on my face was priceless 😮

Yes, before I leave home, I lock my suitcase with the built-in TSA lock and cover it with a brightly coloured luggage cover so it can't be mistaken for someone else's.
