Following up that last poll there seemed to be some interesting discussion... Do you consider standard ATB (FF4-9) to be Turn based?

@NeumaSeven

ATB is derivative of turn based, you take your turn based on the active timer. So yes it is absolutely turn based.

When you and your teammates stand in a line on one side of the screen and your enemie(s) stand on the other side except to run to the other side, attack, and run back when they get a turn, that's turn based to me lol

Yes. The only difference between ATB and traditional turn based (DQ, FFX ECT) is what determines what a turn is. The ATB bar is a visual indicator of when your next turn is up. A lot of people dismiss it as not turn based because it doesn't follow the "my turn, your turn" flow but it is still very much turn based combat.

Some of those games (I don’t remember which ones) allow you to switch between “active” and “wait” modes. “Wait” mode is your standard turn based mode. Enemies won’t attack you during your turn. “Active” mode allows enemies to attack you during your turn if you take too long to make decisions. Some people may not see this as true turn based combat. Technically some of these games do provide true turn based combat. I personally would consider both modes to be a “style” of turn based combat.

Command based is what you're looking for.

I have a friend who only plays turn-based games like Pokemon because of his disability. He needs a lot of time to think. He can‘t play ATB. It stresses him out. Yes there‘s wait mode but the bar filling up still stresses him out. It may be a rigid definition but that‘s enough for me to not consider ATB turn-based.

It’s gonna be hard to admit the golden age of FF had gameplay that wasn’t technically turn-based since the current discussion is “FF would do better if it went back to the good times when we had turn-based combat.” Some would say “FFX was the last good one because it was turn-based” but we gotta be real, there are lots of other reasons to think that.

Yes and no, by which i mean while it has turn based elements, it is not purely turn based. Each character has a gauge or some meter determining how frequently they can take a turn. This gauge fills actively through the battle, hence atb.

@Orih9

It’s more of a yes and no type situation. I think it’s important to distinguish the two

@A.c.e94

It’s active time battle, all in the name!

It augments how the turn occurs using a quasi real time timer, it does however not wire directly to the input process, so id say yes it is turn based.

I do not understand the near religious standing some people seem to hold turn-based combat in

@LunarValkyria

you are still taking turns. lol

Turn based means your character has to wait their turn to do anything. You can't manually move out of the way to dodge attacks, they have to stand there awkwardly and wait for the enemy to scratch them.

Most FF is turn based adjacent. True turn based is exactly that. 10 is the greatest example of how true turn based works - and it's still better than any adjacent counterpart.

@Aranethify

10 was the real turn based. Just like board rpgs, within a turn you can take your time to think your next move. If the enemy can attack you during your action, It is NOT a turn based combat.

@DoubleDBits

Yes you must wait a period of time until your bar is full, aka you must wait your turn. The enemy also has a timer and must wait as well for theirs. the difference between ATB and command based is that the enemy does not need to wait for you to input a command and only needs to wait for their timer and vice versa

@cybrim1

Everyone gets a turn to act, regardless of how it happens.

@DarthJF

Yes, it's a turn-based system where you wait for the bar to fill to get your turn.

I would say "Yes" they are turn based because you have to wait your turn before the character can take action. But they are also still command based in that you select all combat options from a menu. (Issue commands to a each character). So FF1 through FF10 are all turn based and command based. But FFXIII would be a command based hybrid system of action/turns.
