Oops, too late for me. I would have voted for the red-billed gull, because I grew up in a coastal suburb of Auckland city. The gulls were an ever-present feature of my childhood. We knew if the weather might turn bad when the gulls came and settled in the local park. We knew to watch out for them stealing our fishing bait or swooping on unattended school lunch sandwiches. And disturbing a flock on the ground might get you a little present in your hair when they took off.

What was that NZ bird of the week I was so invested in? In poll after poll it always came up short. The Dusky Lusitania? The Ignominious Sharpshusher? The Sooty Peafowl?

Voting closes for New Zealand Bird of the Year at 5 PM NZT!
Vote here with this link here: www.birdoftheyear.org.nz/
You also don't have to be from NZ to do so, and you can choose the top 5 birds that you want to win!
I would have made a video endorsing the wrybill, but I've been exceptionally busy with other work, and time sadly slipped by, which did suck.
Next year though, I intend to do as much as I can to make sure they win for the first time!
Or, maybe, just maybe, with your support, they can get there this time around!
These are the birds I ranked.
Make sure you also confirm your vote with the confirmation email that is sent out as well! :)
