Voice of North Korea by Yeonmi Park

“I never understood that not having a problem can be a problem,” Park said. “They need to make injustice out of thin air or a problem out of nowhere, because they haven’t experienced anything like what other people are facing in the world.”

“Of course, we’re not putting people in front of a firing squad in America now, but their livelihoods, their dignity, their reputations, and their humanity are under attack. When we tell people not to talk, we’re censoring their thinking as well. And when you can’t think, you’re a slave — a brainwashed puppet.”

Trauma is not a competition, neither is social injustice.

@Witch_of_Gains

I remember around 2018/19 when I first listened to your story. From the whole trip, growing from the small town, escaping china and past the frozen no-mans land to SK, man, time has flown. You're absolutely right that woke idealology doesn't not know the hardships folks like yourself, keep speaking out lady. Thank you & have a wonderful day.

As a black woman, this whole statement is ridiculous. Juat because you suffered in one place doesn't mean others aren't fearing for thier lives in others.

I think your perspective is valuable in this topic, most people discussing it have been born and raised in the US and that can effect the objectivity of their judgement of the situation

While I agree that compared to the crimes happening in North Korea the problems in the U.S seem petty. However to completely overlook and minimize the injustices happening to minorities in the U.S is ignorant on your part. It’s not a victim mentality when you are likely to get shot by police just because of the color of your skin. Or maybe you’ll get separated from your kids because you came here looking for a better future for them/ a better life! (Which is exactly what you did) or maybe look into how the police refused to help Korean Americans during the riots in LA. You might speak for North Koreans but stop pretending to be a human rights activist when you refuse to see the injustices that minorities face in this country!

I definitely 100% realize that as Americans we do technically have it SO good compared to many other countries. Absolutely. And I count my blessings believe me that I got to grow up in a western country. However that being said-we weren’t ALWAYS such an amazing place to begin with. We used our rights to make it better. We used our voices-ALWAYS,to create the amazing country that we live in today. That’s what I love most about my country,is that if we don’t think something is right then we can rally,we can protest,we can speak up & actually do something about it. That’s the American way.

YEEEEESSSSS GIRL. Thank YOU for speaking up and being 1000%. YOU are giving voice to the voiceless. I want to be like you when I grow up, fearless and honest. Seriously. Because you came from the depths of hell to tell us what you saw, despite the face of resistance. You are awesome Ms. Park. I can’t wait to read your book. I hope nothing but the best for you.

Thanks Ms. Park for your insights into NoKo politics and society. I wonder what you think about the recent National Geographic documentary on North Korea hosted by Michael Palin?

This. This hits the nail on the head for wokeness so well! Too many people get bored, they read about the injustice of the past, and want to fight in battles that have been long since over. Because the battles ended so long ago, there's no real enemy to fight, so woke people pick fights and twist words to make an enemy and feel good about verbally attacking them. Ironically, this only further drives a wedge between people of different bodies and beliefs, as they associate a group with that verbal attack. If you want to be a fighter for the rights of others, you can't do it from the comfort of your own home behind a screen; nor can you win a concluded battle. Fighting for something that already exists is easy. There's no threat to your life, especially in America, where your right to speak freely and protest peacefully is PROTECTED by the government. If you really want to right these sorts of wrongs to make positive change, you have to be willing to risk everything. Slavery still exists in the world. Concentration camps still exist on the same planet we all live on. Women are treated like material property at the same time that some woke person was "empowering" women by drawing a girl with hairy legs. You may not have the power to make a positive change for vast populations, but you can make small positive changes in your environment. The key to doing that? Be KIND. If you treat someone like an enemy, that's what they'll become. Be open-minded by NOT bashing those who you feel are less so than you. If you want respect, you have to earn it by respecting others. Not everyone will treat you with respect, that's a given; but those that will are who count because they're likely far more intelligent. The injustices of the past and present exist because people are/were being unfairly and negatively judged simply for the way they were born or what they chose to believe. The woke people are doing this exact thing, becoming the very thing they claimed to be against.
