And the British establishment never forgave the Russians for it

Whats even more funny is that Russia wasn't aware of this conflict and was doing its normal business...only later when the British started talking about it as some sort of conflict did the Russians discover they fought the british in some kind of cold war. So the Russians were totally unaware of it but the British assumed the Russians did know and got mad at the Russians for medelling against their interests in Afghanistan.

Crazy how hypocritical Britain was when dealing with Germany. As if they themselves weren't the most intense Imperial colonizers on the continent in its history. Then, they declared war over Poland's sake, but only cause Churchill wanted to use it as a flimsy pretense (a lame excuse) to go to war with Germany... and then proceeded to let Russia take half, and later eventually ALL of Poland, without any declaration of war either. (Not saying Germany was just an innocent bystander in all this, but clearly the British priorities weren't in any proper order of actual importance. Even part of the American leadership would end up saying the exact same thing) For all their "Imperial might", the British pettiness towards their own fellow Europeans eventually cost their entire Continent it's position in the world stage. When they should've been focusing on better industrialization and consolidation of all their lands inside of what Colonies they still had prior to that point of war, they decided instead to throw that all to the wayside and beef with Germany of all people, thanks to Churchill's warmongering being on par with that of Hitler The Irony: the British Empire was Europe's most iconic superpower, and it also ended up being its downfall.
