Indie Game Clinic

EDIT: Thanks for all the kind words below, folks. I see this posts section as a way of speaking directly to the core audience of the channel without doing a video about it, and I really appreciate your support!

----

Re-posting here from the comments, as every week there's someone who wants to have a little dig about a channel being Patreon funded and/or the Discord not being open access.

Every time someone complains that I haven't made myself the unpaid mod of a massive ungated Discord server, I immediately know I've dodged a bullet by excluding them from that space. Total lack of understanding of the economics of content creation, despite happily consuming stuff which IGC's existing backers have paid to support the making of.

There's a reason why so much other game-dev content tends to be sensationalist and selling a money-making dream rather than being about craft. If you want to make even a basic living on YT simply through ad revenue you have to capture a lot of eyeballs.

Without fan-funding, the only thing it makes sense to do is target the broadest audience possible (beginners) or to have a channel which exists solely to advertise paywalled courses. I don't begrudge other creators for doing this stuff, but it's not what I want to do - and I don't think it's what most of you want me to do either!

The channel makes <£400 pcm through AdSense, and the Patreon makes around £2000. After tax, this is a little less than I earnt in my first year as a more junior university lecturer back in 2018, and less than half of what I earnt in my last full-time role as a senior designer.

I love the fan-funding model. I contribute to several Patreons, and have done for years. I'm also very glad that the 350-ish people who currently financially back the channel are allowing me to create university level design education for 20k-50k monthly viewers.

What I really dislike is when people effectively insult those backers by implying that they shouldn't get some type of reward for keeping this channel going (which is what the Discord community exists to provide).

Thanks to everyone who's been supporting the channel in whatever way you can. It's still small enough that I can read every comment, and I appreciate your replies and responses. But please don't insult the folks who make the channel possible, or imply they've been duped in some way, or that they don't deserve their own community.

Hope you all have a great week. 👋🏻

@cdarklock

There's always someone who thinks they should get the value and someone else should spend the money.

Delighted to be a Patreon. Love the discord as I get to pop in, drop a meme about the doc, ask a question and piss off into the void. I really need intermediate (I was about to say advanced - oooooh look at him with his aires and graces) level videos and I learn something new every time. Worth every penny. Also happy for those that can't afford it to enjoy the videos too. Same for the bands I Patreon.

@Amaiguri

As someone who wouldn't personally pay to join most Discord servers, it TOTALLY makes sense to paywall so you can pay yourself and others to mod it. Parasocial relationships are work. Don't ever let the haters get you too down -- they can always pay for the hater tier, if they care so much XD

@Haroombe

I think small but loyal audience is the way to go

@RetroBotDev

Let them hate. Honestly, you're a pillar of the game dev community. We like hearing the harsh truths and genuine advice you give. Its worth more money than people selling dreams.

@VyvyanTheGreat

My game has a friends pass where any number of people can play together so long as the host of the game bought it… and I STILL get the occasional person complaining and telling me to make it F2P. You literally can’t win 😅

@ficklebar

Props to you for going off the beaten track and making it work. Life goals!

@TwentySeventhLetter

It's genuinely very refreshing to see a mature channel with principles and dedication to the craft instead of the dime a dozen "tutorial hell" milking stuff that's borderline self help content. I like when you're real with people about what it takes to do this and this is just another one of those things. I really appreciate you and all your backers because this is a very valuable resource and community.

@JacintoSevillaCreations

I only been in the Discord server for a week or so, although it is very intimdating (especially for someone who's first language is not english) it is clear that the passion and positivity on that group is outstanding. I don't think you can build something like that in the current internet without even a small entry barrier.

@RealNikolaus

I despise all the „make money with this easy slop game trend“ YouTubers and I am so so glad that you are different and focus on the craft itself and don’t sell shovels.

@SourOnYoutube

thank you for making such important content that people really need to hear, some people just wont have their hearts fully open to what youre doing for their own sake even though youre providing well constructed content

Haters will hate, we have no time for them. We are actually producing and supporting our families. Happy to have been supporting since early this year!

Love your content exactly because it's not about marketing or advice. It's about game design and it's important. Thank you for your work

For every 1 complainer sh*t head, there are thousands of people quietly benefitting and appreciating your content dude. You're great. Your content is great. And you deserve to make a living just like everyone else. Except you're choosing to earn a living making a net positive impact in the world. What you do teaches people to hone their craft, and In turn helps them make things that bring more joy to the world. Which is, kinda the ultimate run at this weird game called life right. Love your stuff, silently appreciate all of your content. I watch it. I talk about it. I share it. And there is 1000x more of me than those stupid sh*t heads that have nothing going for them in their life that they feel the need to bring other people down with them. Keep doing you dude. You're awesome, as is.

Been watching and listening to your stuff for a good while now and really appreciate whatever approach works. As long as you continue sharing your knowledge I'm never gonna have a problem with how it's made possible!

If I get my game to a playable state I will absolutely support you and get more involved. All of the videos you've put out hit the nail right on the head and get into what it means to really make games for people. I've been finding that a lot of your titles have perfectly encapsulated my thoughts and feelings about gamedev to the point where I've watched many of them multiple times. I love your humour and style but most importantly the content is top notch. Almost all of your best stuff is being put out for free - time and access is what people are paying for which is more than fair. Gated communicaties keep the riff raff out and you've got more than enough evidence to support that. Keeping the sancity of a niche, focussed community of like-minded people moving towards the same goal is precious. Keep doing what you're doing, and on behalf of all the little guys wrestling with this gamedev thing, I thank you for your commitment and expertise.

@Simon-et4hu

I so agree! We only want passionate and serious(silly-serious mind you!) people on the patreon ^^ I am not a game designer I am an artist, but I enjoy the conversations I can catch there about anything. And I get to see games grow (in my creepy, lurky way) I love that I can support this channel and I think this is a very good reward to have. And it wouldn’t be as good if there was a lot of people diluting the creative waters. Is it gatekeeping? Yea I think. Is it a good thing? Yea I think so too ^^

@electroidx9810

The stuff you do and the way you do it is all correct. If game developers truly want to grow, you're pretty much the best channel imo. And you even fill it with personality.

@a6gittiworld

I support you and your channel because it's you, you remind me of one of my professors from sound design school. You're consistent and provides great insights, thoughts and knowledge. I hope you will be able to continue this journey for years to come.
