The bible suggests we won't recognise the beast and the false prophet when they come on the scene, it says that even the elect could be deceived, so we all have to be vigilant and keep praying that when that time comes our eyes are open

This is a metaphor. He didn’t really expect us to judge people by their apples and bananas.

You can identify false prophets by all these metrics. When Moses threw his staff down, the priests of pharaoh threw theirs down as well which also turned to snakes. False prophets have many ways to identify them and the versus below speak to words as well. Deuteronomy 18:20–22 “But the prophet who presumes to speak a word in my name that I have not commanded him to speak… that same prophet shall die.” … “When a prophet speaks in the name of the Lord, if the word does not come to pass or come true, that is a word that the Lord has not spoken…” Jeremiah 23:16–22 “They speak visions of their own minds, not from the mouth of the Lord… They say continually to those who despise the word of the Lord, ‘It shall be well with you’…”

Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves.

We are to know them by their Fruit Matthew 7:16-20 16 Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? 17 Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit. 18 A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. 19 Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. 20 Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them. By their Testimony ye shall know them, are they a branch who produces other Testimonies ? The Outer Man can’t produce Fruit Only the Inner Man can produce Fruit We know them by who they feed and nourish, the Outer Man or the Inner Man

The fruit of the gospel is more than deeds. Intentional effort to live in accordance with the commandments of God is essential, but it is not the ultimate fruit. The intentional effort is merely how we cultivate, nurture, and fertilize the soil in which the tree of life can grow. A true prophet is one who encourages others to engage in daily practices that will cultivate that faith and instructs those around them to cultivate their own personal relationship with Christ that will produce more growth and fruit than he (the prophet) can produce alone.

The context of Matthew 7 is clear that the "fruit" Jesus refers to is doctrine, not deeds.
