Did the passive crowd not watch and listen to the video?

The actives. I have that exact set Bolinger used and they are no joke. Feel exactly like passives, most anyways. I had a set of Duncan 59s, and they were closer in feel to actives than the Retro-Actives could ever. Very compressed sort of vibe…and a bit too scooped. The Fat 55s are a lot like the Pearly Gates

For how I like my guitars to sound, Emgs are the best pickups on the market. The 57/66 set is amazing, retro active sets as well, Daemonums are great. The Het set are amazing! And Im Okay with being one of the few that prefer actives over passives. Emg is king.

@gravyblue

I have the retro actives. They're great

It's great that they've made actives that sound like passives. Makes me question why though? I understand the value of actives on their own for that huge, compressed vibe, but mimicking passives seems like a fix for something that wasn't broken. I get the noise reduction advantages, but that is part of the vintage tone as well (as ridiculous as that seems most of the time lol). Tone examples here are fine, but not really to my taste so I can't really evaluate them but trust John's opinion in this application.

I watched the video and I was really surprised how well the EMG's sounded. They still had a nice sweet vintage tone but definitely had more output and sounded very clear and articulate, the original pickups in that guitar sounded muddy and buzzy by comparison. It sounded great to me with both pickups, but if I needed a reliable noise free stage guitar, the EMG's are the way to go IMO.

with a boost pedal, it’s all the same

@Scott__C

Aren't the EMGs also PAF-ish on the output?

@ErosGalaxia

Low output PAFs < High output PAFs (w/ A2 mags)

@wordofmouth7679

If the passives were medium output we would be talking but low output is just not versatile.

@soulfare333

They just picked passive cause they're "supposed too." The EMGs sounded FAR better.

@teebalicious

High output vintage tone pickups like the Wolfetone Monkeybuckers 😬

PAF in the neck EMG in the bridge.

I am sure the EMG’s sound great. But I would be that guy who left his guitar plugged up and the battery would be dead when I needed it. No batteries no problems.

Should have had sound clips without identifying which is which and then see how the voting goes. I think there results are more than a little biased
