Shayda Campbell

Let’s go back to the beginning—when did you first start making art?

Maybe you were that kid drawing on every surface (walls included). Maybe you started later, testing the waters with a sketchbook that sat mostly empty for years. Or maybe you want to start, but something’s holding you back.

Vote in the poll, then tell me in the comments: What’s the first piece of art you remember making?

I remember spending hours drawing as a kid… and it did not always go as planned! But something about the process kept pulling me back in. Anyone else? What’s your earliest art memory?

@karmstrong511

I'm not sure why, but I never felt like I was a good artist growing up. I don't remember if a teacher or classmate ever said anything that made me feel that, but I always avoided drawing and painting. The first real drawing I remember doing that I was proud of was some sketched flowers I did with the guidance of one of YOUR videos! That was a few years ago and I was in my early 40s at the time. You were the first person to make me feel like I could find joy in drawing and watercolors even if they weren't perfect. Thank you for that!!

I remember when I came to realize that we had to do more that art in kindergarten. I was devastated. ha ha! The rest of my grade school experience was spent looking out the window thinking about what ever craft I was working on at home. In my upper grades I took as many different types of art classes as possible. I did my first craft show at 13, selling animals made of pom-poms! 😂

-I was put in the «naughty corner» in kindergarten for using too much paper once. My response was to ignore my punishment and go straight back to drawing. I made a big, angry, red heart. The funny part is that the man who put me in the naught corner became my colleague about 15 years later. He didn’t remember that particular incident, but he seemed shocked at his past behavior. We laughed and he apologized. He remembered me though, and showed me a drawing I had made of him back then. Three A4 sheets taped together that he had kept for 15 years ❤️

I have chronic pain and fatigue, sometimes pretty bad. At my wits end, I once again prayed for something to help me. I meant medicine. A couple of days later my husband found an old watercolor pan set I tried it out just for kicks. I fell in love! Prayers are always answered, but sometimes you’re in for surprises. I’ve been happily painting for five years now; and, while my condition remains the same, watercolors have turned something dark into happy imaginary flowers and crooked houses full of color and laughter. This octogenarian says: thank you, Lord!!

In first grade we learned about monochromatic colors and I did a picture of a house in shades of red. My friend and I sold macrame jewelry, wall hangings and plant hangers at a school event and yard sales in fourth or fifth grade. I’m currently doing a hundred days project of watercolor flowers, so yeah about 55 years of arts and crafts. I love it 🌺

I can’t say any of those really fit me for answers. I was more taken with words and memorization as a kid. The first things I remember drawing were just pages of nothing but loops so I could color them in. I liked those more than coloring books. lol Later, I just drew if and when I felt like it. Because I’m shade blind, I stayed away from color. Since I started watching you, I’ve become more confident just in trying and now, I don’t think it matters to anyone but me what I feel about my own art. Thank you, Shayda.

Shayda, seeing you draw and paint got me started! Both my siblings are naturally talented but I’m not. Watching you made it seem possible. I have exceeded my wildest expectations and I’m really grateful to you for that. God bless you for your patience, encouragement and all round kindness in your tutorials.

My first piece of artwork I considered to be the one that started my love of creating was an oil pastel. I was 9 years old and on summer break from school and I used a piece of beige construction paper and made a scene from the show Gilligan’s Island. I still have that artwork ..I’m 61 so that is one vintage piece of art 😂

I remember coming up with this easy way to draw a house and I drew it all the time 😂. It was three rectangular boxes and i would add doors and rectangles on top and steps and maybe shrubs

I was always drawing as a kid. In first grade I drew a life-sized little Dutch girl for Christmas Across the World that hung in the cafeteria. I still have her.

I read on primary school reports that I supposedly did good art but I don’t remember ever thinking that myself at that stage. When I went to high school though i really wanted to try out for the art class, not sure if I could even draw. So went for it and got in, I was so chuffed! I took off from there. Though I never really did any art after school was done. I wanted to study art at university but the university in my hometown didn’t have art, so I took a year off before studying, thinking I would apply to a uni elsewhere for the following year. During that year though I changed my mind and applied to our uni to do psychology instead. I never really made any art since, and always regretted it. I’m trying to make up for lost time now, for the last few years

@EllaReaArt

I have been scribbling on paper ever since I could hold a pencil. My parents supplied me with every art medium I could ever want, but it left me a little lost at times with so many options. The pencil never let me down, though. The first piece of art I created where I realized I could draw was a horse. I was probably 9 or 10. I kept drawing a lot of horses. And my family and friends were constantly encouraging my artistic endeavors. Watercolor was a big NOT GOING TO HAPPEN EVER. It was scary to me & impossible to control. (I was in my perfectionism era.) and then enter you, Shayda. And for the first time, I learned art doesn't have to be perfect just have fun! Now I'm happily settled on Watercolor and pen as my preferred art medium and recently started my own YouTube channel youtube.com/@ellareaart?feature=shared%F0%9F%A5%B3 Thanks for everything, Shayda

I started learning as a Graphic designer in 2020, but later I felt that maybe it is not working enough now and then I left it. Then again after marriage in 2022 I started with proper traditional drawing. I try doodling and sketching in my sketchbook now and hoping to improve it day by day.😊

😅 As a Kid! They gave me markers in four basic colours, and it was an Epiphany! First thing I remember paintig was a fairy princess with a huge head and an impossibly thin waist. 😅 From then on, I was so obsessed with painting that my parents considered it a good thing that the markers run out of ink soon!🤣 They ended up giving me a bigger set, though. Although a pen or pencil was enough to keep me happily drawing on every surface available: spare paper, envelopes, packaging, the back of my grandmother's calendar sheets...😅 But then, school years happened, and the art class killed all the fun and creativity!😥 It all returned, however, once I was at University. I could paint what I wanted again, and was drawn to pastels and oil painting during the holidays (mostly copied landscapes, seascapes and flowers). But then, busy and adult life got on the way, years passed and I forgot how to hold a brush. Feeling seriously stressed and angsty, I walked by a stand full of colouring books with a label that caught my eye: Anti-Stress Art! 👀Desperate, I bought the one that looked most calming, and went home. 😂 Found my old school supplies, and started feeling curiously relieved. Suddenly, the pandemic outbreak was there, and I found myself confined with my feeble supplies and a solid Internet connection. Enter Shayda Campbell!😍✨ You know the rest! 😉👍 The algorithm struck gold and changed my

My first "art" was on my parents walls as well as inside all the books I could reach on the shelf. My style was probably abstract/impressionism.

@madebylora

The oldest piece of “art” I’ve got is from when I was about 5 or 6. It’s a picture of my family with a pattern around the border. I remember that I spent so long getting the pattern right that I never finished the drawings of my family! Haha

When I was at my young childhood age as a school kid , my age was that time only 11 years I barely could managed to draw a simple flower and even if I had drawn it a bit nicer then at last my worst painting used to damage its whole beauty , my other classmates used to make fun of my drawing skills then . I still remember, how for the first time I felt so embarrassed in front of my school's drawing teacher and my whole classmates . But one day miraculously my hands started to develop the drawing and painting skills that totally blowed off my mind . I was like..... "What ! Have I drawn it ? How?" That time my age was 23 and now I am 29+ .
