Married at 3 in a village where child marriage was the norm, Sunita Choudhary’s heart was set on education.

Her in-laws were to take her after she turned 18, but at 5, she pleaded with her father, “Mujhe officer banna hai!” He agreed, and Sunita studied under a lamp, managing farm work during the day. She would walk 6 km daily for middle school—and excelled.

After acing her Class 10 exams, she moved to town and came across a police constable opening. Out of 50 candidates, she was the only girl to clear the written test.

Her father’s words echoed—“Tera officer banne ka sapna poora hona chahiye.”
With 9 months of rigorous training, Sunita became the first female police constable from her village at 19.

But her triumph was short-lived. Within months, sharp stomach pains led to a devastating diagnosis—stage 2 ovarian cancer. Her life came crashing down. For 6 agonising months, she endured chemotherapy, lost all her hair, and weighed just 35 kgs.

Her father spent Rs 4 lakh on treatment, while neighbours questioned, “Beti pe itna paisa kyun kharch kar rahe ho?” People mocked her baldness, calling her “ganji.” Sunita confined herself to four walls, hiding her pain and scars.

Even after resuming work, she wore a cap to cover her baldness, struggling to regain her confidence.

But life had another plan—she found solace in music. She enrolled with a music teacher and learned to play the harmonium, which brought her peace.

When she moved in with her husband after recovery, she told him about her condition and the low chances of becoming a mother. But he stood by her, saying, “I want to be with you no matter what.” His acceptance gave her the strength to look beyond herself.

Sunita chose to devote her life to social work. After duty, she began visiting schools, teaching children about good and bad touch, road safety, and self-protection. Her warmth and dedication earned her the title “Policewali Didi.”

In the past 3 years, she has educated over 1,000 children and received a commendation from the police commissioner. She has even recorded 25 devotional music albums! As her hair grew back, so did her confidence.

Yet, when she looks at her old bald pictures, they remind her of how far she’s come—and how much further she wants to go.
