CLRCUT

The US Justice Department has terminated USD 811 million in grants intended for crime victims, including funding for trauma recovery centers, mental healthcare for police officers, and services like sign language interpretation. The cuts affected 365 competitive grants from the Office of Justice Programs (OJP), which had been approved to award about USD 3 billion in fiscal year 2024.

This decision is part of a broader push by the Trump administration to reduce federal operations, particularly targeting programs related to diversity, equity, inclusion (DEI), and refugee assistance. The process has been described as disorganized, resulting in the dismissal and rehiring of federal staff.

Following media attention on cuts, including one to a pet-friendly domestic violence shelter grant, the department reversed some decisions and restored aid to certain providers, such as shelters in Connecticut and Maryland. A Justice Department spokesperson did not immediately comment, but officials clarified the cuts were selective to avoid disrupting victim services, and Attorney General Pam Bondi reiterated the department’s commitment to supporting crime victims.
