With Thunderbolts* (and Ironheart I guess) Marvel ended phase five. Phases don’t really have themes, but at least the first and third phase had prominent themes. And here’s what Phase 5 is about: Purpose. I guess it could potentially be argued for any movie or phase, but it goes with Phase 5 very well. (This is based on #NandoVMovies video about phase five)
Thunderbolts* — Yelena feels a void in her as she feels that she has no purpose in life. This is seen among every single Thunderbolt and I don’t think I need to explain it. That’s why we see Red Guardian as a Limo driver or Bucky as a politician. Without the team they find at the end, they’re just trying to find something that’s right for them. And this is supposed to be the finale of the phase, probably fitting the best out of any of these movies.
Ironheart — Riri wants to make something that’ll last. She knows she has greatness and wants to use her skills but she can’t fit in and everyone keeps rejecting her. But it’s clear that she’s gifted and destined for something more.
Daredevil: Born Again — After Foggy’s death, Matt quits Daredeviling and commits to being a lawyer, which he knows is less violent and for the better. Frank convinces him that the city needs Daredevil and he agrees, acting against Kingpin’s cause. Also after Foggy’s death, he starts to question God and doesn’t go to church anymore, feeling the same type of void as Yelena.
Captain America: Brave New World — The Leader is in prison and wants revenge, as it’s the only thing he can do. He uses his gifts to achieve his goal of ruining Ross. Ross wants to leave his legacy as president while covering up his secrets. Sam is of course the new Cap and must live up to it. This doesn’t fit as perfectly but it still has plenty of it in it.
Agatha All Along — Through many miles of tricks and trials, Agatha does what it takes to complete the Road for her powers for her son— also why she killed other witches. Her son was all that she really had. All of that just for her son to have a life. And all life comes with a purpose. Death has a natural purpose of claiming all lives and restoring natural order and Billy subconsciously created the road so he could get Tommy back.
Deadpool and Wolverine — Deadpool wants to move on to something greater like the Avengers while Wolverine is trying to find a new purpose after he let the X-Men down. Even in the void those characters don't really have any future.
Echo — Kind of a fever dream, but there was something with her doing it to find her place in life as a killer trained under Kingpin. Like in Thunderbolts but a lot worse. A lot.
Loki Season 2 — Sylvie tries to find a new life that she can live normally and happily. With all of the side characters they talk about their own lives left behind and the purpose of life itself. And of course for Loki, he has his glorious purpose in saving the collapsing universe tree, which is why Kang sent him on the mission in the first place.
The Marvels — Kamala becomes a more important hero, key to the plot with her bangle. Monica also becomes a hero, even sacrificing herself at the end so she can have an ending like her mom. That’s more purpose than Carol ever had. Carol is boring as usual but she wanted to stop Dar-Benn, still keeping Dar-Benn’s goal of saving Hala, why everyone hates her. (In-universe. In our universe we have even better reasons to hate the character)
Secret Invasion — Not canon, but ok I guess Fury is old and is the only one who can do the stuff and save the Skrulls or something.
Guardians 3 — The final ride for the team, ending with their split as they all go to find their own things that they’ve been striving for all along. They've cared for each other but now it’s time for themselves. This is definitely more about purpose than the other two Guardians films.
Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania — Scott and friends are now celebrities and have moved up in life, only for it to be thrown off its course again by Kang. There’s a full rebellion— literally about purpose, and Kang’s story is way too drawn out, but it's about his rise back to power so he can become the being he once was. His purpose. (Which didn’t exactly go anywhere 😉) #avengers#marvel#thunderbolts#fantasticfour#spiderman
