Both but Toney did it more dangerously and bold imo, he did it on the inside, pressing forward, his style more so reflex based, as he moved his head more systematically than Floyd, Floyd picked shots off more, and also not to mention Toney was doing it against heavyweights while being a natural middleweight. Imagine doing that against Samuel Peter, 260 lb puncher.

Toney had the purest Philly shell, Mayweather had the best all around Philly Shell.

I’m going with Toney he was aggressive and was still slipping and countering but him,Floyd, and George Benton were masters of this

James Toney is my favorite, but Mayweather is forever gonna be the first guy you think of the Philly Shell with

The poll shows that not too many people truly understands what philly shells are for it's not just for not getting hit James lightsout toney style is aggressive but he really mastered it both defensively and offensively

Each incorporated the phelly's shell in a totally different way Ever since Mayweather started using the phelly's shell, he pretty much became a purely defensive fighter. Sure, he finished a couple of fights, but nowhere close to his early days, when he had an entirely different style. Tony used it in the exact opposite way, he used it for offense, he'd get you to hit him, use his phelly's shell to absorb pretty minimal damage, then he'd knock you out with a counter punch. Both where brilliant, but had totally different goals and principles. I prefer Tony's though

The point of the sport is to hit and not get hit. Mayweather was arguably the best at this so the only metric anyone has to pick Toney over Mayweather is if you like his more aggressive style of fighting.

I think Toney did it against much more dangerous opponents then Floyd did, and did it without being as risk averse

Toney was far more comfortable and better at countering out of it. I have no idea how people think Floyd’s Philly shell was better when it clearly wasn’t.

If your not casuals and watched them both properly youl know James Toney shoulder roll was on another level

In my opinion what made Floyd special was his ability to keep score in his mind and to jus enough to win the round never over extending and didn’t get flustered or pressured to entertain the crowd jus win the fight they will pay to see him lose anyway

Toney fought BIG punchers and managed, mostly, to not get hit

I think James Toney was the most accurate representation of how the philly shell was meant to be used, but Floyd Mayweather was more successful in its use because he was better at adapting, using his footwork, and utilizing distance to his advantage.

Toney utilized offensive defense... Youngsters will never know but that man was dangerous, there's no comparison here...Dude was 168 and went up to heavyweight and beat guys like Holyfield, and did it easily...

Floyd bc he would do the not get hit part. Toney would sit there and just eat so many shots . Two of my favorites

The shell was Toney's base thru most of his career. Him and Benton used it the most so that's a more interesting comparison.

James Tony . Easily . Tony would happily stay in the pocket and roll off everything. , Floyd would tie up or run . James also used his style to win at heavyweight! Floyd didn’t take risks like James. Tony for the win
