Today I've learned that everyone prefers the Original Thomas Down the Mine Pilot over the final episode.

Not everyone, I assure you. The pilot is super interesting and cool don’t get me wrong, but the final version is a huge improvement in numerous ways imo. Still, really cool and a true treat to finally see! Lots of fun, interesting creative choices and whatnot. I respect those that prefer the pilot version tho

While the final reshot episode is fine, but I prefer how Thomas' crash is filmed in the pilot showing the ground crumbling away and falling into it.

Let me tell you, I didn’t expect the pilot to look better than the final version. It has some shot compositions that the final episode doesn’t have, even the shot of the mine collapse is more dramatic.
