Real talk...
We don't talk enough about how the crack epidemic rewired the Black community’s way of thinking — not just in our families and neighborhoods, but also in how we do business.

The mindset of survival over sustainability... quick flips over long-term growth... distrust over collaboration — these habits didn’t come out of nowhere. They were born from a system designed to destroy us from the inside out.

A lot of our businesses fail not because we lack talent, vision, or hustle — but because we’re still healing from a survival economy that taught us to:

Prioritize the short term over the long term

See each other as competition instead of partners

Believe that there’s not enough to go around

Move in fear, instead of building in trust.

Until we heal those wounds, until we reprogram that thinking, our businesses will keep facing the same cycles.

This ain't just business. It's cultural recovery. It's mental recovery. It's spiritual recovery.

We ARE the new Underground Railroad — freeing minds, freeing families, freeing futures.

For anyone who wants to go deeper: Here’s some real facts and reflections to sit with... The Stats: 40% of Black-owned businesses close within the first three years (SBA data) Only 1% of Black businesses get funded by venture capital. During the pandemic, 41% of Black businesses disappeared — compared to 17% of white businesses. The average wealth gap between Black and white families is still over 8x. The Mindsets We Inherited from Survival Culture: Hustle over structure. Scarcity thinking: "If you win, I lose." Fear of collaboration: "I gotta move solo to stay safe." Distrust in systems and each other. Selling anything and everything for a quick dollar — even when it’s not sustainable. The Healing/Solutions: Build networks based on trust and resource-sharing. Teach business structure, credit, investment, and healing from trauma side-by-side. Support Black businesses even when they’re not "perfect" — give us room to grow. Shift from "hustler mentality" to "legacy mentality." Normalize mentorship and collective ownership (co-ops, collectives, group economics). It’s deeper than dollars. It’s about deprogramming and reprogramming. Healing is wealth. Community is wealth. Ownership is freedom. #ConcreteToLegacy #CulturalRecovery #HealingTheHood #Irosefromtheconcrete
