This Might Be Risky

Dr. Russell Ledet’s extraordinary journey from a Baton Rouge hospital security guard to a physician-scientist embodies resilience, vision, and the transformative power of representation.

A former Navy serviceman, Ledet once studied chemistry flashcards during shifts to support his family. Today, he holds a PhD in molecular oncology, an MD/MBA from Tulane University, and is a triple-board resident in pediatrics, psychiatry, and child/adolescent psychiatry at Indiana University.

Driven by his upbringing, marked by poverty, food insecurity, and a mother’s sacrifice, his path was paved by defiance of limits. Told by doctors that "security guards can’t become physicians," Ledet found an ally in a surgery resident who let him shadow, an opportunity that ignited his medical career.

Ledet co-founded The 15 White Coats, which funds underrepresented med students and uses posters to redefine who wears the white coat. - Africa Giant
