Both Lincoln's and Washington's birthdays each were once considered a holiday. The two were combined to make it one holiday, Presidents Day.

When I was a kid growing up in suburban Chicago, anything related to the State of Illinois (state government, county courts, schools, etc.) were closed for Lincoln's Birthday, while federal offices and multi-state businesses (think Fortune 500) were closed on Washington's Birthday. So, I was off the 12th, and my father was off the 22nd. But, here is irony. In Cook County, the courts are closed on both Lincoln's Birthday and Presidents Day.

They took Washington's Day and Lincoln's Day and combined them, because the Federal Government was too cheap to keep both of those while adding MLK Day. They axed the names from W&L and made it one generic day to keep the same number of annual holiday days. Initially, Democrats rebelled against the name of the new holiday and called it Great Americans Day.

Truthfully Washington had his own day, Abe Lincoln had his own day but they took both away and gave one to a Black holiday. BULLSHIT
