Here’s an idea: UPNS (Or whatever it’ll be called) is actually a brilliant Idea!
Think of it this way: Norfolk Southern has had a pretty bad Reputation, and PSR (Precision Scheduled Railroading) indefinitely sealed its fate for the future! Had it not been for East Palestine, maybe half of its livelihood could’ve been Salvaged. On top of all that: Norfolk Southern has regularly practiced awful Business practices over the years! These include Crew Layoffs, Tying down trains on the mainline (Or on Steep Gradients), performing little Car inspections or Engine Servicing (Despite literally owning the largest shop in Altoona, PA), and we certainly cannot forget the incredibly stupid moments where Dispatchers are improperly trained on Radio Conversing with Train Crewman.
Meanwhile: Union Pacific, in spite of its own setbacks, proves to be one of the most Powerful, Loyal, and Reliable Railroads in the country. It stands as a very rare example of a Railroad that has survived 2 Centuries of both Hardship and Dissolution! While it’s also true that UP had a prior history of wrecks and their own set of Negligence over the years, it is Not even close to that of Norfolk Southern’s Abysmal set of Megaton Disasters!
Perhaps the best way to put it is that UPNS could actually Reintroduce a Major Steam Program that NS once performed in the 80’s, where more than 20 Steam Locomotives (E.G. N&W 1218, Nickel Plate Road 587 and 765, Southern Railway 4501) were Rejuvenated and given a second lease on life! To have UP and NS join forces would mean that UP could not only put Norfolk Southern in its place, but show them how to really run the US Railroad system more efficiently and effectively! Plus, UP’s Steam Program could also Spark a new sense of Moneymaking and Inspiration to perhaps allow for many more Steam Engines to come back from the dead, and lead the way for a brand new Era in Steam!
