I used to use a uparmor “skirt” with merge blocks or connectors. Basically make the base ship, the original armor shell, then you fabricate heavy armor plating that can shield places needing more protection. Also they can be detached and used as a kinetic missile as a last resort. I built Durable, not pretty,
