MGMHealthcare

A Global First, Achieved in India.

In a landmark moment for medical science, MGM Healthcare’s Institute of Multi-Visceral and Abdominal Organ Transplant has accomplished what no other centre in the world has — the successful performance of the world’s first Modified Multi-Visceral Transplant (MMVT) for a rare and complex intestinal condition.

The 32-year-old patient was battling diffuse primary intestinal lymphangioma, a rare disease that led to severe blood diarrhoea, malnutrition, infections, and abdominal swelling — leaving conventional surgeries impossible.

A multidisciplinary team, led by Dr. Anil Vaidya, Chair and Director, performed a first-of-its-kind MMVT, replacing the stomach, pancreaticoduodenal complex, small intestine, and large intestine — with key surgical innovations that improved graft function and reduced immune complications.

This medical milestone was made possible through the gift of organ donation, the support of TRANSTAN, and the efforts of Dr. N. Gopalakrishnan.
Special recognition to Prof. Dr. Ramakrishna for his pivotal role in planning, along with Dr. Senthil Muthuraman, Dr. Sivakumar Mahalingam, Dr. Dinesh Babu, and Dr. Nivash Chandrasekaran for their surgical expertise.

The story has drawn widespread media attention and global recognition — a testament to the excellence and innovation at MGM Healthcare.

The patient is now on the road to recovery.
