I would start with something i could get my hands on that was former military. such as a M996. THERE IS SO MUCH MILITARY METAL OUT THERE AND IT CAN BE HAD FOR CHEAP. not to mention it gives you a fantastic platform to build on and out from. even if you wanted to get a companion trailer to fit that out as well, they can also be had on the cheap, allowing more of your budget to be put into the project it's self

Sprinter. Despite being generally more expensive to maintain, the Promasters have known transmission issues and are lower to the ground, making the Sprinter better for off-road.
