Yall, just so you know, PLEASE do not ask to collab on short stories, novels, or any writing projects unless we’re really close and PLEASE do not suggest plot ideas or character ideas for my book.
I only work on one project at a time and I usually binge projects until completion so I’m not open to start new projects anytime, plus my writing process requires prep before I start projects— including outlining, character profile building, and world building— which I know a lot of writers don’t like to do. The way this turns out is when I agree to collaborate, a lot of pressure gets put on me to do all the world building, outlining, and character building by myself, super fast because the other person doesn’t like to do those things and doesn’t want to wait for me to do it. This puts a lot of pressure on me which is difficult because I take my time doing these things to support themes in my stories so I don’t have to do as much while drafting. Additionally, most of the people who want to collaborate with me have never finished a full draft before which, again, gives me a lot of heavy lifting since they’re going through the full process for the first time.
As for plot suggestions, it may seem like I’m still in the writing process, but all the stories I post about are actually already fully drafted and plotted by the time you guys hear about them. Their plots aren’t random— I spend months on my outlines due to the fact that my stories exist mostly as critiques of real world issues and therefore take a lot of thought put into them. I don’t want to add a love interest for Veer or give a character that’s meant to be an example of a real life occurrence a happy ending or make these two characters get together or kill major characters that I deliberately left alive. I also don’t want to write a plot idea that you came up with for you. If you want to see something happen in a book, please write it into your own book. I’m writing mine and I don’t want suggestions.
I know this post seems mean and it’s partially my fault for never turning anyone down or asking them to stop, but I have trouble saying no and I don’t want to come off wrong. These are just boundaries of mine so I wanted to put them out there.
Gingerly
