In episode 7 it shows that there’s these chamber thinfys that they might be trapped into unless it was just part of the adventure thing!! but I tink tbat the might’ve got kidnapped of somethinf and got put into those chambers, once they enter the digital circus it forces them to think that they put on some headset that put them there ( atleast becayse Caine literally controls them I think from I thought of from the pilot episode since they couldn’t remember their name)
