148-1박 팀장은 자신의 자리로 가서 가방을 내려놓고 컴퓨터를 켠다. 남의 집에 갑자기 방문한 사람 같은 변명이 이어진다.— Team Leader Park goes to his desk, sets down his bag, and turns on his computer, offering excuses like a guest who has dropped by someone’s home unannounced.
148-2내일 개인적으로 지방에 갈 일이 생겨서요. 아무래도 자료를 미리 챙겨서 따로 가야 할 것 같습니다.— “I suddenly have to go out of town tomorrow for personal reasons, so I figured I should grab the materials in advance.”
148-3그의 목소리가 과장되게 쾌활해진다.— His voice grows exaggeratedly cheerful.
148-4그런데 깜짝 놀랐습니다 ... 당연히 아무도 없을 줄 알았는데 불이 켜져 있어서.— “But I was startled… I thought, of course, no one would be here at this hour—and then I saw the lights on.”
148-5문득 그가 말을 멈춘다.— Suddenly, he stops speaking.
148-6그건 그렇고, 사무실이 왜 이렇게 덥습니까?— “Anyway, why is it so hot in here?”
148-7그는 성큼성큼 걸어가 창문들을 활짝 연다. 사무실 벽에 걸린 선풍기 두 대도 켠다.— Striding across the room, he throws open the windows and switches on the two fans mounted on the wall.
148-8열풍이 밀려들어오는 창을 등지고 걸어오며 고개를 가로젓는다.— Walking back with the blast of hot air at his back, he shakes his head.
148-9이건 뭐, 찜질방이 따로 없네요.— “My goodness, it’s like a sauna in here.”

149-4날렵한 눈길로 당신의 책상을 살핀다. 젖은 휴지를 깔아놓은 재떨이, 여러 개의 담배꽁초, 커피가 가득 담긴 머그잔, 휴대용 녹음기와 테이프들.— His sharp eyes scan your desk: the ashtray lined with damp tissue, several cigarette butts, a mug filled with coffee, the portable recorder and tapes.
149-5탐색하던 눈이 당신과 마주친 순간, 예의 변명하는 듯한 말투로 그가 말한다.— When his searching gaze meets yours, he speaks again, with his usual half-apologetic tone.
149-6임 선생님은 일하시는 걸 정말 좋아하나 봅니다.— “You must really love your work, Ms. Lim.”
149-7제 말씀은, 하고 그가 고쳐 말한다.— “I mean,” he corrects himself.
149-8만일 제가 머리가 희끗해질 때까지 계속 이 일을 하면, 임 선생님 모습이 앞으로의 내 모습이 되겠구나... 뭐 이런 생각을 합니다.— “If I keep doing this work until my hair turns gray, I guess I’ll end up looking just like you… that’s the thought that crosses my mind.”
149-9그가 박봉의 활동비에 비해, 대가에 비해 과도하고 불규칙한 업무에 대해, 유난히 정맥이 불거진 당신의 깡마른 손등에 대해 말하고 있다는 것을 당신이 이해한다.— You understand that he’s referring to the excessive, irregular work compared with the meager pay, and to the veins standing out on the back of your thin hands.
149-10레이저프린터가 낮고 성마른 기계음을 내며 인쇄물을 뱉어내는 동안 그는 잠시 입을 다물고 있다.— As the laser printer hums and spits out papers with its low, irritable whine, he falls silent.
