What is the term for the rear part of a boat?

@CasualNavigation

The “stern” is the official term for the rear part of a boat. The “transom” is the flat surface at the back, but the overall back end is called the stern. “Astern” means behind the vessel, and “bow” is the front.

I build parts for ships, I'd like all of upper management to be able to answer questions like these before giving them any power to delegate work.

The stern frequently features a shuttlebay, and/or an aft photon torpedo launcher. Some designs may also include rear phaser banks.

The transom is the rearmost "part" of the boat. If you had omitted the word "part" I would have said stern.

Fun fact: singlish has the word "gostan" meaning "reverse / backwards" which derived from British sailors who would order boats to "go a stern"

@Urugami45

The transom is the part of the boat at its Stern end where you mount the outboard motor.

"Get to the back of the boat!" Tom said sternly. The next question should be the correct spelling of bosu...bos'...boatsw... cargo and rigging guy.
