I don’t have a roommate but if I did, I would make sure I live somewhere that I could afford to pay the entire rent by myself in case something happens. This is why you need to live with only people you know are financially responsible and don’t live above your means because unless you have separate lease agreements, both tenants are responsible for covering the rent. If one tenant can’t pay, the other tenant is still on the hook or both of y’all will be evicted. If you end up covering your roommates rent, and y’all had an agreement to split it, that’s a breach of contract and you can/should sue them for the rent they didn’t pay. And if you have to break the lease, they’d be responsible for that too.

Don't live with roommates you're asking for more problems and enemies.

Funny thing is I was the responsible roommate, kept to myself and everything. I paid $100 security deposit and was suppose to get it back. He waited ‘til I moved to a whole new state for him to say that he wasn’t giving it back to me. Keep in mind the place was beyond filthy and he had a live in girlfriend who wasn’t paying a dime. Arguments damn near everyday between them. I had to play my games with my headphones on. Lol! If I was still in said state then yeah I would’ve sued him. Moved from CA to AZ, definitely not worth it. Some people are just beyond miserable and will do anything to bring you down. I’m doing much better, engaged now and living in a house.

No. First I've been on both sides in the scenario. No because I'm late (not behind) on a 3rd of my bills at least every 3-4 months out these last 3 years. Suing, What's it going to get me? I'm not getting compensated. What may happen is wasted time and energy that could have gone to finding a resolve with the roommates issues regarding budget. ✌🏼❤️

Only if their negligence is causing me money like late fees. If they pay it late but still pay it, what’s the point in suing them. But they would definitely be responsible for any late fee charges.

40 years ago, I was leaving college, and my roommate didn't pay his part of the utility bill. I used my very last $ to pay it and then sued him the same day. He had been very good and helpful to me, but I was scared to death to not pay it on time, and I didn't have $.1 left. Thankfully, he paid right after I filed. I felt bad as he had helped me quite a bit in non,-financial ways, but I was desperate for the $.

By the time the law suit makes it through the Court system you would have to pay it or get evicted. You can only sue if you paid their portion of the rent. Otherwise, what are you suing for?

Do they have a track record of paying late? Did something happen?

The rent as to be paid Where the rent to suppose to come from? 1 person cannot afford the full rent would be thee reason for a roommate to cover the other half.

If I chose to have a roomie I definitely needs a background check first then you gotta have a good azz job& be financially able to cover your part of the expenses when I have mine ready. If I have to pay the entire expense & the roomie Skip out then I would proceed with evicting them.dooo a written documented agreement legally just in case the roomie decides not to pay do a deposit or something idk I've never had a roommate I like my peace & space I'm just saying 😂
