The UK government has made changes to the Ukraine visa schemes, but there are still important options available for Ukrainians who want to come to or remain in the UK.
Ukraine Family Scheme – This scheme closed on 19 February 2024. If you applied before it closed, your application will still be processed.
Homes for Ukraine Sponsorship Scheme – Ukrainians and their families can come to the UK if they have a sponsor. Successful applicants can live, work, study, and access public funds.
Biometrics & Identity – Applicants must attend a visa application centre to provide biometric data (photo + fingerprints). Children under 5 only need a photo. Valid or expired Ukrainian passports, ID cards, or official documents may be accepted.
Permission to Travel Letters – These are no longer valid. You must not attempt to travel to the UK with them. New applications must be submitted under current schemes.
Ukraine Extension Scheme – Closed to new applications on 4 February 2025.
Ukraine Permission Extension (UPE) Scheme – Open since 4 February 2025, this allows Ukrainians who already have permission under a Ukraine scheme to apply for an additional 18 months’ stay in the UK.
If you are already in the UK – You may be able to extend your current visa or switch to another visa category, even if normally not allowed. You should also keep your Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) safe, as it is needed for extensions.
⚠️ Important: If you travelled using a permission-to-travel letter and did not apply to stay by 13 August 2025, you can no longer apply under Ukraine schemes. You should seek immigration advice immediately.
