If you've been hurt by a church, you're not alone—and you're not wrong for feeling the way you do. Sometimes it's not God who’s let us down—it’s people. And when that happens, it can shake everything: your trust, your identity, even your willingness to walk into another church building.

But here’s the truth—your identity was never meant to come from a church culture, a denomination, or a role you hold. You’re not just what you do or who you're connected to. If you’re in Christ, you are a child of the Most High King. You are deeply loved and seen by Him.

Healing won’t happen overnight. But one of the most important steps you can take is to seek a faithful church—not the biggest, flashiest, or trendiest, but one that preaches the Gospel consistently and lives it out with care.

And yes, it’s worth saying—there is no perfect church or perfect pastor. But there are many quiet, humble, faithful leaders out there doing the work of ministry with integrity. You may never know their names—but they’re in the trenches, and they’re worth finding.

It's always people that let us down. Not God. Maybe our expectations of God lead to a let down but not God.

I can attest to the fact that church hurt is real hurt, and I can tear you apart inside when the people that you expect to love you and treat you as part of the body of Christ and as a spiritual family all of a sudden are no longer people you can trust… I’ve grown up with a lot of spiritual pain and abuse some of it from my family and a lot of it from the different churches, I’ve been to. I am sure some of it was caused by my ignorance and need for growth, but sometimes it wasn’t …. And it definitely wasn’t everything I was doing because I was always trying to serve both God in those around me because I both love God and people, regardless of how I grew up. You would think after the first few times that I wouldn’t be at church anymore and sometimes I was tempted to never go back after some pretty horrific experiences …. But I couldn’t get past the verse where it says “ do not forsake the assembling of the Saints”…and “ it is not good for man to be alone”… I realized that I had to keep risking it on that eventually I would heal enough or I would come across people that I could trust a little more . The only person I’ve learned I can fully trust 100% Is Lord Jesus and God, Almighty… Everyone else I trust to a point and I realize they could hurt me, but I’ve grown enough to pay attention and stop hoping that everybody will do what they’re supposed to do all the time . Christians aren’t always gonna do the right thing and we certainly aren’t either . I now look for people who don’t pretend that they’re perfect because people who put up a façade will usually be the ones that hurt you (also people who act like they’re horrible wretches even though they’re saved, will also seem to end up, hurting you as well)… But someone who honestly and humbly serves God will usually do the right thing in the long run …. I’ve really been hurt by those people unless it was something I needed to learn. We have to be strong enough to rely on God and work with others because we are the church and as a body of Christ, we cannot tell another part of the body of Christ that we don’t need them and that we don’t need to be a part of the body because we do . We just need to keep searching until we find where on the body we belong .

Truth. Facilities, programs, events, and so on aren't necessarily bad in a church. But if that local body of believers isn't centered around the preaching and teaching of the bible IN CONTEXT (and living it out), then all the other organized "stuff" is meaningless.

@aarondavidsdad

I’m curious if you have thoughts on the Michael Tait story since you likely are still connected in the Christian music world as well as living in Nashville? Thank you.

“Then I heard another voice from heaven saying, “Come out of her, my people, lest you take part in her sins, lest you share in her plagues;” ‭‭Revelation‬ ‭18‬:‭4‬ ‭ESV‬‬

This is all true. The hard part is when certain doctrines drive the bad behavior and yet they refuse to rethink those doctrines, it just continue teaching them to the next generation. Even if they blatantly disregard the Scripture.

@justincase1919

The only problem I have with this is what some people might call being "hurt".

Ultimately it is God who let's us down if he entrusted his message dissemination to people.

*It is never God who let's us down, it is people. Fixed it for you 😊

I got kicked out of the lil home church I was going to last week. I hadn't been for several weeks and I posted a video to the church group chat about the false teaching at Bethel and kicking me out was the result

@PandoraXX3

It’s never been about finding a ‘perfect’ church, a lot of churches aren’t even doing the very basics, the absolute fundamentals, of what it means to represent Christ. A ton of ‘imperfections’ can be overlooked if there’s a genuine love and care for people.

@robertandersen6387

First, recognize that people are imperfect, including the ones who have been hurt. Two, know the truth about who you really are, your true identity, and God’s standards for following him. He loves everyone. That isn’t the problem. The question is, do we love Him? If we love Him, we will obey his commandments. Sooner or later, we have to follow Him, not ourselves. Beyond that, do the best you can and God will take care of the rest.

The whole Newsboys thing is really messed up. You feel like you’ve been lied to and fooled.

Thank you. I joined a church and was baptised. the church then wouldn't dedicate or Christen my baby boy. I felt betrayed when I started to see the new age and mini culty click's in the congregation too. This was over ten years ago. I finally started going to different churches now , looking for a home after coming to the same conclusion. People are sinners, even the ones we look up to. We should be forgiving and focus on the Cross.
