Iruka is the secretary to the Student Council and one of Shinji's closest friends. She takes her job very seriously and is quick to correct anyone who is causing trouble. Her role has given her the respect, likeness, and fear of others. Although the faculty are concerned about her taking things a little to serious, there is a reason why.
On April 1st, when the former students of Akademi were attending orientation. She and Shinji were present to possibly see if there was any chance of their enrollment later in the year. That day, Sumire told her brother that she had something important to attend to. Overhearing this, Iruka didn't think much of it. However, as time went by, she started to get concerned.
She started to ask others where Sumire went and they said that she went to the third floor east girl's restroom. Going there, she didn't find anything. No sign of Sumire anywhere.
Worried, she immediately went to Shinji and told him about the situation. The two started to search all around the school, hoping to find her. While Shinji was looking around the hedge maze, Iruka was search around the incinerator.
The incinerator was on, where she assumed that someone was burning some garbage. Little did she know, that was where Sumire was being disposed of.
For the next few months, she and Shinji worked desperately to find Sumire. One day, their answer was finally given to them. The trial of Ryoba Aishi was enough to convince the two that she was responsible. Even though there wasn't enough evidence, Iruka could tell that Ryoba was lying.
However, there wasn't anything they could do. Shinji slowly slipped into depression while Iruka felt something that continues to plague her to this day.
Guilt. Failure. Useless. She felt like she could have saved her if she was more suspicious about her "meeting". Feeling like she failed her close friend, she swore to never let anyone lose somebody that they care about. That would be her reason for enrolling into Akademi.
Little did she know, her efforts would be in vain...when Rei Amasawa came into contact with Shinji.
