ONLY communicate with your landlord or apartment management company via email, and ALWAYS document and take pictures. I didn't give a 30-day notice that I was vacating my apartment, but my previous management company is still mailing me my security deposit - minus fees.
Why? Because I attached photos that supported my reasoning for moving out abruptly.
Side note: I was on a month-month lease term after completing my 1 year lease. Still, always correspond by email and keep good documentation if you ever need to break your lease due to your unit being uninhabitable.
