Two Texas men have been charged for their plans to stage an armed coup on the 87,000 person Haitan island of Gonave.
Gavin Weisenburg and Tanner Thomas went through extensive preparation before the plot was foiled by the FBI. They began learning Haitan Creole, Thomas enlisted in the U.S. Air Force specifically to gain military skills, Weisenburg enrolled in a Fire Academy to train in command protocols (though he later failed out) and they schemed to recruit members of the D.C. area homeless population to serve as their mercenary force.
They planned to arrive by sailboat with firearms, take the lives of all men, and enslave the women and children. Both men were arrested and charged federally and could face up to life in federal prison.
