What does a DI Box do?

@PJ1R

A DI box converts a Line level unbalanced signal into a Balanced Mic level signal, normally used when you have a long run between stage and desk as line level unbalanced signals decay very quickly over distance whereas Mic level balanced signals do not. The Balancing bit basically stops interference

Little known fact, it also works the other way round to convert balanced to unbalanced

Not necessarily a mic level. You can also go from hi-z to line level. If an interface doesn't have a hi-z setting, I would put a DI in between.

Does this means that it is recomended to plug an electric guitar into a DI Box and then to an audio interface instead of connecting the guitar directly to the interface??
