I always say this, shadows make a scene, which goes hand in hand with lighting. Forget about all the post processing and screenspace effects. Forget reflections, particle effects, shaders, whatever. If you get lighting and shadows done right, your game will look good. And that's not me making stuff up. Human brain picks up the most amount of information about the environment from shadows. Shadows tell us where objects are in relation to one another, how far or close they are to one another, they give us information about objects we cannot even see like things behind us casting their shadows in front of us. It's insane what an impact shadows have when it comes to a scene. That's why sunset scenes always hits different. That's when shadows are at their longest and when our brains are flooded with details for our environments. Add to that pretty, crimson lighting, it creates a fascinating view.
