Roadcraft Nottingham - Motorcycle Training

I'm looking at doing an honest, 11,000 mile long term owner's review upload on my Zero SR/S. This is mainly for people who are seriously looking at these as I've now had this bike over a year and have picked up on stuff that 3 day reviewers wouldn't.. Feel free to post here any questions you'd like me to answer. Cheers. ☺

@chiltano

A review of the bike with the panniers (in terms of carrying capacity) and handling 2 up would be nice. Also how does the battery range cope with said added weight? Any truth to 'loud pipes save lives' in the sense that more people pull out on you or don't notice you? Engine braking - I know therr isn't an engine per say, I just wanted to know if there was an equivalent version of engine braking with the electric motor? Maybe a brief example of how much money you have saved by charging as opposed to filling up with fuel in a year? I know I sound awfully specific but I'm just trying to think of ideas that are less likely to be asked a lot but would still be useful. 👍

First of all, happy new year! How has it handled the great British weather? Has the rain and drizzle and general misery brought it any undue wear or harm that it should've resisted? Suitable for beginners? Usability as a commuter or practicality for longer range jaunts? Favourite sandwich 🤪

A few questions Russ. Knowing what you know now, would you buy it again? Is the future a motorbiking electric? Is long distance, UK touring realistic?

@Swoop10

Dose it put a smile on your face? 👍

Looking forward to your honest opinion, I like the idea of ev’s (out of my reach at the mo) but I think they have the potential to be great.

@PeterYannick

To me it is all about the range. What was your furthest trip? How long does it take to charge? How secure it is in terms of antitheft systems?

@IainWoolley

Interested in your thoughts on pillion accommodation, handling, range, etc. I haven't yet taken a pillion on my SR/S (wasn't bought for that) but am wondering if it can do so. Also interested to see how all weather use affects fasteners and other metal parts with corrosion, etc.

@paulwilliam55

I'd be interested to know how long the tyres last. I'd imagine all that torque could eat through the rubber if a rider gets a bit enthusiastic.

@JIMWSMITH

Question. Do you have to adapt your riding style compared to a ice motorcycle?

@roviwoteap2375

If out on a long trip, how easy is it to carry charging leads around and are charging points readily accessible? How long does a “quick” charge take and how far could you go on that? To me, electric vehicles for the masses are still a long way off. Not everyone has a driveway/ garage to easily charge their vehicles.

@iallso1

I would definitely consider a Zero, but there are no dealers in Australasia at this time.

@seankearney6915

Any deterioration in range over the year? Will a full charge still go as far as it would when new.

@Grahamvfr

Great idea.. Obvious one I'm afraid. Has range anxiety (apology for trending phrase) ever affected your ride, if indeed you've suffered it.

@MRrailaway

I guess range and charge speeds are interesting as well, personally i would need to get atleast 200 km per charge and be able to charge it over night to be able to commute with it. Also drive line, is it chain, belt or shaft drive? Whats the maintinance like? What needs to be greased and how often are bearings changed?

@nickstockley

just remembered about this and thought ahhh I didn't get notified about the review video being posted because i'm not subscribed to the channel so I hopped over here to look for it and it seems you didn't do it. Was looking forward to it as I fancy one as a 3rd bike (when I get access to adult money)

@PaulZero

I’d be interested to hear about the apparently fault sensitive nature of electric? Real v phantom faults? Also experience with Belt drive? Did it snap or need maintenance / inspection / tightening? Seat height an issue? Those are comparably low? Anything you can share versus the unfaired SR/F? Finally, the charging, is it as painful as everyone says? Finding working stations ok? I worry that type-2 AC won’t be supported going forward.

@pbrooka9619

How much does it cost average a month to charge the bike, and if its cheaper than fuel, do you think it makes up for how expensive the bikes are?

@dennisnl7125

Belt, did you replaced it yet? On the roadside? I broke a belt while riding 2013DS and 2017DSR. Mostly at 20k-30k km. And 1 time only lost some tooth of the belt and replaced belt.

@nickstockley

Just one….. would you buy it again?

@GaryMCurran

Russ, I'm going to assume you still have your Pan, I can't imagine you ever parting with that. I was looking at Zero's website yesterday and I see for the SR/S you can fit the Shad top case and panniers. Obviously not a touring bike, but would you fit at least the top case and then put the 3.6Kw PowerTank on the bike?
