Joe Gilder • Home Studio Corner

I’ve shared a lot of tips on this channel over the last 15 years. Which have had the biggest impact on you and your mixes?

All sorts of things! • The reason I found your channel, which was looking for an explanation of how to pan things correctly • The idea of static mixing (mixing with all the plug-ins and effects turned off first) • The idea of quiet mixing (turn your volume down so you can hardly hear the song because that brings out what’s too loud or too quiet a lot easier) and more and more

Recently panning tracks was an eye opener. Using subtractive EQ was my first big lightbulb moment.

I just found your YouTube page 2 days ago and I just want to thank you! I’ve kicked around bands as a drummer and have written a few songs, but after a recent health issue (I got the crap scared out of me) I realized how badly I want to write and record my own stuff. At 50 it’s hard to learn all the things. I’ve tried books and courses, but your videos are the only thing that focuses on the most important thing, songwriting. You have obviously put in tons of work on your craft and I have benefited greatly in a short period of time. I appreciate what you’ve done. Thank you! 🙏🏼 For me the thing that I find is the most helpful is your advice on “writing 50 songs”. I very much fall into the “write 10, record 10” category. After I saw that video I wrote a song that I like better than the last 5 I’ve written…. which proves your point. What a wonderfully rewarding passion this i

EQ and compression tips helped me the most! I've gotta learn about that side chaining next!

Bubba…your videos gave me a ton of advice during my first paid full live band recording/mixing/mastering job after opening my studio. Sometimes I forget that folks on the other side of this screen are really “folks” and I have the means to contact them. Should have said “thanks!” quite a while ago. GIRATS- for me, that’s the one. When you put the cans on and start dialing in a vocalist, instrument, etc. Don’t just look for correct gain, metering, clipping…Listen to each source with the intent of getting it as close to the final sound that you want (or think you want) on the way in. Well hell, that makes sense! So much time and CPU saved.

Vocal EQing. It used to be a mystery to me but your tricks made wonders!

Starting with a static mix. Without that, you're painting the chair before you've even cut the wood.

GIRATS for sure. If I had started with that a long time ago I would have saved SO MANY HEADACHES trying to make poorly recorded tracks work in the mix

top down mixing...however I've found that all of your tips are valid and useable AND you don't seem to have a 'gear ' agenda. It's fine to talk gear and try new things, but invariably it comes down to ability. I truly admire the work you put into these videos. I'm going to use your track downloads as reference to see how far off I am.

"You can't polish a turd", balance is very important (but you also admitted being wrong about balance, that is, there are nuances), don't overdo it with plugins, but also don't be afraid to use big moves (stronger compression or two compressors), and don't boost the EQ, but rather start with cutting first (i.e. subtractive EQ).
