It all depends on the item and how far past the due date. Caned items that will be cooked yes. Dried foods, yes. Cake mix ,nuts , oil no thanks. Rancid fats are bad.

I just ate two civilian emergency rations that probably 23yr or older…. One was chilly Mac and the other was spaghetti and meatballs and it just goes to prove that if they’re stored properly, they’re edible. Not only that they’re edible, but they tasted fantastic.😂. Yes, I really ate them and no, I did not get sick.

I found a jar of peanut butter in a camp box in the garage, that was 13 years past it’s use by date. Tasted fine, and didn’t kill us.

I started prepping just before covid hit. Food vacuum sealer bags are life savers. We just ate pork chops that were dated 2019. Just as fresh as when I bought them. Seal up dried beans and they will last for 20+ years 😋

When you buy something that says usda or whatever alphabet they want to use. They are going off looks and smells, that’s all !

In 2020 I was brand new to prepping and the only thing I knew I really loved enough to eat every day was boxed mashed potatoes. I know they're not nutritious but that's the only thing my early-prepper brain could think of to buy. I bought 30 boxes. They lasted me exactly a year and I timed it almost perfectly. In 2021, I bought 120 boxes over a period of a few weeks and they were larger too. After the pandemic spiraled down, I didn't eat them just as much, but I'm still eating on them and some of them have been two years past the use by date. I don't taste any difference. I didn't even put them in mylar.

11 years past BBE....nah, I'd pass. Though I did recently eat some peaches that were two years past BBE... Does that count??
