$40.00 from a big box store and they are seriously neglected, one from a reputable nursery would be $60.00, outrageous!

Since covid they have hiked prices. And once things calmed down didn't lower. So I am taking a break from retail garden shopping. About 40 to 60 for a small arb.

Agree that prices seriously increased during COVID. Plants were in short supply because gardening was about all we could do. Shipping costs have made everything higher.

In Westchester County NY they would be around $45 from Home Depot and more than that from a retail nursery. The difference is that those in a retail nursery are healthy and may actually be grown somewhere relatively close by. Whereas the HD plants are transported hundreds/thousands of miles, are neglected, smooshed together with no air circulation and watered poorly. Also the growth medium in the containers is likely different in HD versus Nursery plants. Soilless mix is almost impossible to rehydrate once it dries out once - does HD know that? Buy from retail nurseries! - you'll get a better product and you get what you pay for. Big box stores are ruining both independent garden centers and ornamental horticulture. Their selection is very narrow and very random. You will not have a biodiverse landscape if you confine yourself to what you find at Home Depot.

Hello Erin, In Atlanta Stone Mountain 🏔️ here :) I would probably get it from a specialist Nursery. I work at one and the growers who we obtain them, are little bit more specialized. Less likely to die and when you planted, make sure that you put in plenty of 14-14-14. Been watching you a couple of years and I really appreciate your content! By the way, whenever I plant something that big, knowing it will grow that big, I’ll always take the shovel and shove in the sides of the hole, a little bit of the fertilizer. We appreciate your mentioning the British gardeners and Carol Klein has been so instrumental in my education. You remind me of a younger Carroll Klein , you’re so enthusiastic and so much appreciated. Robert the Gardner .☮️🌲🌲

1 gallon plants at the big box have been $20-25, so a 2 gallon is going to be more like $35

I believe $ 10-15 in my area of Western Pennsylvania. However, I refuse to ever buy them again at a big box store. I bought twelve, 12 ft ones this summer in August. $59.99 each. Marked as fall plantings, I did not even get them in the ground in October, for they were completely dried out and dead even after regular watering. I was literally heart sick. I go to find the receipt to return them , you know the one year guarantee that they have, and because my receipt was faded not even 3 months later, I had to get a $720.00 in store refund, and it was a fight to even get that.... P.s. They threw every one of them returned in a dumpster! 😞

Too much! Right at $30 in Michigan. And when a person needs at least a dozen, that's a project that isn't getting done.

28.24 to 39.38 depending on variety at Lowe’s. Most of them sit there, unwatered and uncared for until they are banish to the clearance rack. As if it wouldn’t have made more sense to price them fairly to begin with. Pikes is more ridiculous but at least it’s employee-owned….and they are somewhat knowledgeable plants people. I don’t shop at Home Depot.

The Skyrocket Juniper I bought from Walmart was $80 CAD. At end of season there was some Holmstrup Arborvitae on sale for $20 CAD at Superstore.

$39.99. 1/2 off after Christmas. I put them in pots on my front porch and then plant them in my yard in the spring.

Regular price atlantic/maritime region in Canada is $35-40 for 3 gallon. May get 50% off with an end of season sale. Some garden centres do buy 4 get 1 free all summer.

The Impatient Gardener
Hi gang, I need your help. How much would you guess that a smallish arborvitae in maybe a 2-gallon pot (I'm thinking about 2-2.5' tall) would cost in your area, purchased at a big box store?
