(2) When I saw the video of the assassination attempt, the name that immediately came to mind was the wicked woman Athaliah, who appears in the Old Testament (I also cover her in Chapter 15, "The Fall of the Southern Kingdom," in "Spiritual Warfare as Taught by the Bible: The Conflict Between the Kingdom of God and the Kingdom of the Devil," so please take a look). She made a plan to wipe out the entire royal family (her grandchildren). This was nothing but a challenge to God's plan. God had promised that a descendant of David would inherit the throne. If David's lineage was cut off, God's plan for the Messiah to be born from David's descendants would be thwarted. In other words, the devil was working behind Athaliah's back. (4) But God thwarted the devil's scheme. Among the grandchildren whom Athaliah tried to kill, the youngest son, Joash (only one year old), was rescued by Ahaziah's sister Jehosheba and hidden in the temple. This is exactly what it means to be "hanging on by the skin of your teeth." The line of David was preserved by this child. Seven years later, high priest Jehoiada moved to support the infant Joash as king. Jehoiada called his faithful servants to the temple, revealed his plan to retake the throne, and led Queen Athaliah to the palace and executed her. Thus, the devil's plan to wipe out the lineage of David was thwarted. (5) The family line leading to the birth of the Messiah was hanging on "by the skin of its teeth."
