I actually got to see a few of these being carried by the Royal Hungarian guard when I visited Buda Castle the other week

Would love to feel a mint condition bolt. Age and refurbs haven’t been kind but I bet they were much better back in the day

Might not have been the best ww1 rifle, but it sure was the prettiest.

My favorite milsurp rifle. Maybe not the best, but you must admit it had style.

Every rifle of this period is susceptible to fouling with mud mostly in the trench warfare of WWI. The design prove to be suitable and enduring through all the wars, which fought my country in the first half of XX century. Also it withstand competition with other rivalry weapons of the Entente. About the stiffness of the bolt it should be taken to account that after WWI most of the existing M95 do not exist in their original configuration and caliber 8x50. They were rebuild by using parts of other rifles, purchases of leftovers or contributions, which were mismatched and lately modified - shortened and re chambered for spitzer 8x56 cartridge, for which they were not designed at first.

Interesting. Russian field reports claim that Mannlicher was handling dirt and mud better because it would fall out from the open hole in the magazine.

Austro-Hungarian Mannlicher 1895
Ferdinand Mannlicher's straight-pull, bolt action rifle designs ultimately led to this. His rapid loading enbloc clip system had carried over from the previous models but now paired with a fairly complex rotating, front locking bolt. These elegant long rifles are fairly light for their size, in addition to being narrow and well balanced. Sadly, however, they were also susceptible to fouling with debris and mud thanks to the open-bottomed magazines. The bolts could also become stiff and difficult to work if poorly maintained.
