@brucesmith9206

It is used as 'hello' a lot, but it actually translates to 'good day'...

@HaleysTusk

Literally means “good day”, “Salut” is a closer equivalent to “hello”, meaning “hi”

Technically, it means "good day," but could also mean hello as well. Still a polite French greeting :)

Its important to use literal translations because changing the words to what you think is being communicated can change the intent of the speaker. People need to be smart enough when listening to translations to know different language have different connotations attached to words and phrases. To not keep it literal will never bring the world closer to full understanding of one another's thought processes and values because its very true that each language also limits a cultures' thoughts. Also, we will miss all the beauty and poetry of each language by simplifying it.

Or “bonsoir" if it’s the evening.

@brownell.landrum

It means good day. It doesn't mean any of the others. It's used as a greeting like we would say good morning.

Maljour is a much less popular greeting, but perfect if from a Parisian waiter.

"How are you?" translates as "Comment ça va?" Literally, "How's it going?"

@boomergames8094

It means, "I speak French" or "I don't speak French, but I learned to try to say bonjour to be nice." In Paris, saying Bonjour lets the Parisian know if you are a foreigner or not.

@marie-gemini

Bon means good, jour means day. Like soup de jour is soup of the day. Sorry Megan your pole is incorrect.
