Southern Shan State’s Tazaungdaing Festival — Kalaw Fire Pole Celebration
In Kalaw town, the traditional “Mee Shaw Tine” (Fire Pole) and fire lotus offering rituals are part of the local Tazaungdaing Festival.
Traditionally, the fire pole festival is held on the full moon day of Tazaungmone, and it has been celebrated for over 60 years. Though the way Kalaw celebrates differs from Taunggyi’s famous Hot Air Balloon Festival, both share the same spiritual purpose — offering light to the Buddha.
Before the event begins, participating teams parade along Kalaw’s main roads with illuminated floats and lanterns before heading to the fire pole ground near Mawmyayoo Park, south of the Clock Tower. During this time, some roads in Kalaw are closed for safety and festivities.
The Mee Shaw Pole is a unique tradition of Kalaw — a bamboo pole over 25 feet high, tightly bound with bamboo strips and pinewood soaked in oil. Crafting the fireworks and decorations takes around one month, producing structures at least 25 feet tall and 4–5 feet wide.
When the bamboo rockets (Yan Kwe and Yan Sine) are tied to the pole and ignited, the fire tower shoots up into the sky, releasing dazzling bursts of light and fireworks — a truly breathtaking sight.
Each team spends weeks preparing their fire poles, showing great effort and respect for their cultural heritage.
Because the festival lasts late into the night, visitors are advised to dress warmly and enjoy the celebration to the sound of Shan drums and gongs.
In 2025, Kalaw will host its 20th Fire Pole Festival, beginning one day after the Tazaungmone Full Moon, and lasting about 7–8 days.
