I probably would have used an expansion joint there. The walkway is going to move with temperature changes, even if it had been tied in. If you had tied it in, you might have been dealing with cracks in the walkway in that area.

Expansion joint for sure. Idaho has warm summers and cold winters, movement will lead to cracking.
