The first laser was based on a ruby rod that was mirrored at one end and partially mirrored at the other. But what gas discharge tube was used to excite the ruby rod into a lasing state?

@petoperceptum

And now Styropyro makes rubies with a laser. Things have come full circle.

Ruby Rod is excited by the 5th element.

I came here to make a Ruby Rhod joke only to find I’ve been thoroughly beaten to the punch πŸ˜‚

Sometimes a degree in physics has its use. I’ll go back to sleep now. 😴

@safirahmed

Ruby Rhod was a fictional character in the 1997 film The Fifth Element.

I took a lasers and optics class in university and still got this question wrong. I doubted myself πŸ˜”. Now I must re-educate myself of this fact with the correct amount of lashings

@HFG

I honestly only understand about 6% of what you teach/discuss, but i still love it. I wish I would have learned all of this stuff 30 years ago instead of working on junk cars πŸ˜…

Somebody send Clive an old November 1964 Popular Science magazine. Inside are the complete instructions for building a ruby red laser.❀

I maintained and customized industrial YAG lasers at one time. These used 4kW xeon lamps to excite them and a 3/4 hp water pump to cool the lamp and rod. Somewhere in my things I still have mirrors, a rod, and old lamps.

@smilerbob

Ruby Rod always needs to be excited 😁

Yeah i heard Chris Tucker also has a gas discharge problem.

on of the greatest inventions that proved some old physics maths right.... I'm amazed by those great minds who worked with limited labs possibilities back thenπŸ‘

My thesis advisor was a student of Ted Maiman. So that makes him my academic grandfather 😁

I had one!! It was an old lab demonstrator model that came in a wooden hinged box.

Fun fact, Chris Tucker played Ruby Rhod in the fifth element.

Instructions unclear - we need a schematic πŸ˜‚

I am disappointed that I am far from the first one to come here to make a Ruby Rhod joke....... But I am so proud of all y'all at the same time 🀣🀣
