The "algorithm" quickly flatlined this video -- I suspect due to a way worse dislike ratio than usual. Which is fair... However, it's still getting decent views from people sharing it directly, which is super cool! If you found it thought provoking, consider sharing it with people you think would get something out of it! Like the pre-algo olden days...

And thanks for all the comments! You shifted my perspective on a few things, like the danger of "tech disruption", the importance of avoiding "non-starter" language for more effective communication. You also made me more aware of the complexities around "moral superiority" as a tool for personal conviction and motivation while also being very off-putting to others.

I really appreciate your thoughts. Even the act of disagreeing with someone else can be a useful way to understand what you believe and explore what you care about.

Thanks for this video! Your explanation of the curse of privileged oppression helps a lot. I grew up upper middle class and extremely academically privileged. People are often surprised that despite being a queer, (recently) disabled, woman of color...I am more privileged than the majority (not all) of white cis straight men I know. That includes most of the guys I went to a selective high school and excellent university with. It's not that I haven't dealt with the more troubling harms of various -isms. It's that education, connections, and having a safety net gave resilience, resources and opportunities to take tremendous risks that paid off. My visible minority status and palpable ambition helped me find a series of very influential champions that both catapulted me forward in my career and helped limit the harm of the various biases I faced. I wish people could better understand intersectionality better.

WRT the algorithm, a couple of things. Firstly, the video is 44 minutes long. People are busy and have precious little free time, for which they have many options. 44 minutes is a big ask. I watched it because I know you make quality content, but if the video were by some rando, there's no way in hell I would have watched it. My personal rule is <=10 minutes, unless the topic (or creator) is compelling. Secondly, since I'm not a video creator, I have to ask you, does YT show you a timestamp of when a dislike landed? This would obviously be the most important data. Perhaps at some point you say something which is received badly, even if you didn't mean it as such. Which brings me to my final point. You're clearly intelligent and knowledgeable, but even as such, I think you still have some work to do WRT the meaning of words. Specifically, make sure you know their definitions, especially for the important concepts in the content, and make sure that for those concepts the definitions are stated, and if the video is longer, remind the viewer about the definitions because people forget. I've seen many online (and IRL) discussions devolve into confusion, disagreement and even conflict all because the people were making the same sounds with their mouths, but those sounds mapped to different concepts in each of their brains. (Well, rather, the online people were making the same strings of symbols, not mouth-sounds.) Bonus final point regarding video reception: way before the flag made its appearance, I could recognize that the video was largely about the current sociopolitical situation in the US. Youtube is a worldwide platform, and a lot of people don't give a damn about the US's internal problems and/or resent American youtubers assuming everything is America and everyone is American.

Checks out. Definitely been sharing this around. Not only did I find your central thesis persuasive, but the core metaphor of the treadmill vs. slide vs. thriving generalizes really well to contextualizing a lot of life challenges, at least for me at my point on the treadmill...

I have been meaning to watch it! It's on my watch later... but the content is heavy and I know I'm going to have *thoughts*. Love your content. Will loop this in the background to let the algods know that this is the best shit on this platform

Hey! I watched the video when it came and and liked it. Specifically the point about the hedonic treadmill and people with comparative privilege feeling frustrated by criticism pointing out their privilege. I thought it was a well constructed video. I was surprised to see it criticised a lot for its length when it was posted on r/videos. Hope you don't feel too discouraged by the reaction to oi

@fugitive_

It’s on my watch later but it didn’t have this title when I put it there, now I’m much more intrigued to watch it sooner. I’ll have to get to it later when I’m not so sleepy, I just tried to watch it and was like “huh? What? I’m drawing a cat?” Lmao

I can at least say that it had to be served to me a good amount of times for me to actually watch it which I can't assume is good for the algorithm. I know I like your channel but like you acknowledge a non political youtuber going into it more overtly is always a jump that's not necessarily going to be comfortable. The title also sounds like it could be really self congratulating (ie we're too good for own good oh no it sucks that I'm so epic and empathetic if only I could be meaner etc etc) which it wasn't but it's still a deterrent to giving the video a shot in the first place.

I recently unsubscribed from a youtuber with about 1/60th of your subscriber count because they were writing essays in community posts about how ripped off they felt by the algorithm only showing their video (on obscure retro games) long enough to get double digit views in a week despite the wide reach of Youtube. They've made 45 videos over the last 8 years, about half back then and half within the last few months. What I'm trying to say is, it may serve you well to stop looking at certain metrics unless you rely or are trying to rely on Youtube for your livelihood. The algorithm makes itself known enough in its impact on almost everyone's scripts wrt certain words that are no longer say-able. Posts about it are just like, enough already. Make videos or don't. This time next year, you'll probably have a 100k plaque in the frame. Relax! Take it from someone with 10 years exp. in my field that has been unemployed for 2 years. You can't always succeed all the time.

I mostly agree with the video and I still found it condescending. I think people disagree mostly because they care more or less about different issues and about different aspects of morality, not because one group is evil or misled. I also question the degree oligarchs have more influence today than in years past, and the degree that has in the american dream. I really think a lot of the economic issue developed countries are facing stem from a housing crisis, which I see more about zoning regulations than market failure of some oligarchy plot. But that's a lot to cover in a youtube post. What I think is really worth saying here is that your attitude towards the video getting animosity is pretty great :)

It makes sense to me. I feel very oppressed as a female who doesn’t want to work on my moon cycle. It’s a horrible injustice and no one talks about it. Being a highly sensitive person in this culture is not fun. I’m completely over whatever American culture is or ever was. We need to start over, completely. Decentralize, localize, read labels. The phones are siphoning our very thoughts. We type them instead of speaking in person. The phones give illusion of connection. Without the phone, no connection. Doing a video about the history of matriarchy and the centuries long war on the divine feminine would be very interesting. Can’t believe no one questions working on their moon cycle. They’d rather take pills, or use unhealthy modern methods. Just plug it up and pretend to be a man lol. Raising their daughters like boys. It’s bizarre.

You should correct your gastromancy video where you claimed that Islam was native to the Iberian Peninsula.

Hi there! A bit off-topic, but I think this could make for great content. I was studying memory and came across some inconsistencies regarding short-term and working memory—they seem to be used interchangeably. One of the articles I read suggests that the difference might be more about terminology than actual concept, but I’m still a bit skeptical about that...
