Poool

Hello, last poll I promise.
TL;DR
Prefer stylized hand/keyframe 3D animations or human-like motion capture 3D animations?

You enlightened me about AI voices in the last post, so there will be no more AI voices on this channel going forward.
Okay, this poll is more for my pure curiosity, but it's also for me to get to know you more. As many of you already know, "Return Trip" was not only my first video in six years of this post, but was also my first dabble in motion capture. But, just like the previous two polls, "A Casual Shift" has some negative comments about motion capture.

I'll admit, it's still a very new medium for me, I've never had any physical motion capture experience before. It's just me in my tiny office flapping my arms and legs around, (and spinning while falling over sometimes). The jittering artifacts you noticed so far is simply my inexperience in this style of animation, not the motion capture in general. But I hope to improve upon that in the next project.
Mocap does save me a lot of time for simple human-like movements, but it's not like it instantly takes away all the challenge of animation in general, as I am very limited on space. Raw mocap in the animation industry needs to be edited heavily, and 99.9969% of the time, raw mocap will never be approved as a final pass. I would even argue that it sometimes can take even longer than hand animation.
But I also understand how some prefer the classic keyframe/hand animation. It gives more room for style and uniqueness, at the cost of being a lot more work. (and no physical accidents lol)
For quick reference, all of my videos before "Return Trip" were hand animated. "Return Trip", the Bad Apple crossover and "A Casual Shift" were done in motion capture.

Thank you for all your feedback on all these polls 100%. Like last month, I will post a WIP of the next project in the next coming weeks or so.

@GhostGaming-kd3so

I think you should do both, use a little bit of mocap but continue to use hand animations

@TheSuperGoober

I really enjoyed the motion capture. It felt so clean

I’d say a combo of two would be the best of both worlds if you know where to splice them in each animation cut. Love the mocap and wanna see you utilize it more in future videos! But It def can be used in tandem with hand-animation (for example: blending from mocap to by hand for more physically intense character animation and such)

As much as I loved seeing motion capture being used for the first time, without cleaning it up it feels rather rushed for content. As an animator myself I really understand how long it takes for the smallest seconds, but the result is something to be proud of. Many people know you for your animations as you have a wonderful talent for that, so I'd really recommend to stick with that. ^^

Although motion capture sounds like a lot of fun along with how as you said can be a beneficial time saver for human like movements. I just see hand drawing animation far more beneficial for cartoon like characters which is what you work with. Sure they are technically human like but they aren’t humans and motion capture can sometimes mess that up because of those slight differences. Also, the thing about hand drawing animation is sure it’s going to take longer but as you said is it brings out the style of the animator. To be perfectly honest with you Poool, if you take away the lighting and the fancy particles and such what’s left is your style and we greatly miss seeing that animation style of yours as its what makes you well you. I just also wanted to say thank you for having these polls as it means a lot to all of us to have the chance to voice our opinions on certain matters. Stay snappy my friend!! ^^ Side comment: I can imagine you probably have a lot of fun flapping your arms and legs around and such whilst doing motion capture as it’s something new to you. Though maybe consider getting some floor padding in your little office so you can avoid getting yourself too banged up when you need to do dramatic actions like falls. Just a suggestion x)

I'd love to see some more Mocap. I'd be cool seeing more full length mocap animations, but with the way this pole is going, it'd be cool to maybe use mocap for more complicated movements then, or more casual moments??? Idk....

Long response lol. My initial reaction is a hard vote for hand keyed. Then I calmed down and watched your videos again. My understanding is that yes, mocap absolutely allows for a faster workflow with naturalistic human movements, while hand keyed allows for stylization. This only becomes a problem if you try to shove them both into the same video. I feel like it would be rather obvious when a change was made. So, I feel that whatever video you do, the choice of animation method would need to match the style. I feel that if you’re going to make videos that feature a lot of grounded, human like gestures like in Octoling Hangout, mocap would make your life easier and would probably be the best choice. However, if you want to make action scenes like in OI part 3, well then you’d better invest in stuntmen and a bigger room, otherwise use hand animation to capture the eases and energy of the scene. So it is mostly up to you based on what stories you want to tell. Do you want slice of life stories that are told through subtle performance, or do you want exciting tales that feature high energy spectacles? I will say, some people prefer hand keyed simply because they know of the hard work that goes into it, and to see a beautiful product come from hard work makes them happy, because perseverance is awesome. However, the time and hard work can really delay your ability to show the world the stories you have in your head. Me personally, I’ve always appreciated the hard work and improvement of others, especially when the product comes out high quality.

To be honest, we would much love your animations like how you used to do them. It brings back so many memories and feelings seeing your animations like how it was years ago. 🥺🥺🥺

@Michicookies

Favoring hand animation but I agree with the other consensus of blending the two. I think you could hand tweak things to give better motions to things that need it!

@FireFlieKing

I honestly prefer hand animated ,gives lots of life to it

@BrokenNooby64

What about a hybrid of both? Mocap for animations that might be too complex at parts or certain segments.

@Zone_X3

Tbh i think you should do both, maybe at some points you animate and at some points you motion capture. But if you will only animate or make it with motion capture its not the end of the world

@MFV13

Poool, I'm so glad you returned! I've been watching you and every Splatoon YouTuber out there for the past 3 years now! I hope you can finish the last 2 parts of Octoling Innocent 2! I've already watched the first 3 parts and after I watched the 3rd part, I was like "I gotta see what happens next!" Hope you can keep making these awesome animations for many years to come! Keep up the good work! You rock!

@fate7418

Tbh I have no preference, I think both styles look good and there’s not much to complain about, I think it’d be cool to see a little more motion capture, maybe only shorts/clip kinds of videos (if you decide on making any) could be motion capture to give yourself more practice? Like I said I don’t mind, but I think it’d be cool to have a variety! Maybe even certain scenes could be motion capture while everything else is hand animations, kinda like how video games have cutscenes? The important moments/fights could be motion capture while the rest could be hand animations? This is only my personal preference though!

@Chomperling

Use both to help you animate, they are two different tools used for two different purposes and one shouldnt be eliminated for another

@RavenRevix20

1. If u've waited 1 more year i could'd made a hazbin hotel meme out of ur channel 2. I actualy don't really care which one u choose, because both have their pros and cons. I actualy didn't even see much of a difference in that 3. The ai voices will dissapear, but pls keep the voice-thing. This was so incredible i really would miss it It's not an overreaction if i say that it's weird for me now to watch splatoon videos without voices😅

@jambles3752

Though I prefer hand animation, I understand why using motion capture is easy for you, so I suggest you blend the two together in some way. Maybe have action-packed moments be hand animated and calmer moments be motion captured.

@NovexusNui777

Do a mixture of Both, continue animate by hand but use Mocap for more trickier movements

@Princess_I

Honestly, since you said it yourself that you're working in limited office space, motion capture is just asking yourself to get accidentally hurt. You definitely don't wanna start your return with an injured body. So I'd say go for hand animations.

1 year ago | 1

@Kenam223

Felt like with MoCap, you’re also asking yourself a chance of injury if you’re not careful here and there. Even with the safest environment, your joints, muscles, just almost any part of your body will randomly cause something wrong within an instant that you don’t expect. Hand animations will require extra time and focus but get less chance of harming parts of your body though! Well on injury you may end up if not careful is mainly hand and fingers, even wrist too. Do what you think is best but also be very wise about it, Poool!
