D’Angelo, the Grammy-winning neo-soul pioneer who redefined modern R&B with raw sensuality and political depth, has died aged 51 after a long battle with cancer.

Emerging with ‘Brown Sugar’ in 1995, he spearheaded the neo-soul movement before expanding its boundaries on the experimental ‘Voodoo’ and the politically impactful ‘Black Messiah’.

A perfectionist who released just three studio albums, D’Angelo leaves behind a body of work widely regarded for its emotional depth and musical innovation.

Friends and collaborators, including Questlove, hailed him as a genius whose influence will resonate far beyond his brief but brilliant career.
