U.S. Colt 1900, Converted Sight

Browning's rear sight, which also served as a safety, had not gone over as well as hoped. The original Colt automatic was therefore advanced into the Model 1902. This left plenty of finished pistols and parts behind which needed to be sold. So a slightly modified, fixed rear sight version emerged. Because of the removal of the safety, the firing pin was shortened. This meant it needed to be accelerated sharply by the hammer to reach the primer with any force. Given the "Model 1900" name wasn't ever assigned by Colt's Patent Fire Arms, this pistol also lacks a distinct appellation.

@tenofprime

The sight safty is one of those things in firearms history that sounds good but most users will find more annoying than helpful. I get where it came from, especially early with automatics, but it vanished for a reason.

I love the proportions of these earlier Colt Autos: they remind me of the (more) modern Javelina long slide 1911, which just has such interesting aesthetics. Cool how relatively minor changes to a few cuts or dimensions can radically alter the overall feel of a firearm.

It’s funny that Browning did a 9mm cartridge in the family that became the 1911 first. Colt .38 just doesn’t sound right

Why does it remind me of dante's dual pistols(ebony and ivory)

My first gun I drew well, the .45 1900. 1992 at a portland comic convention and i thought the obsure independent comic i was reading (it was batman but a regular guy with a big gun) had made up the 1900 in .45 as I'd only seen 1911s used in comics prior. Created ground breaking Pages because the longer 1900 frame over lapped the panels, groundbreaking art at the time. I was two tours into the Global war on terror in my early 20's before i knew this pistol was real.

Satisfyingly long slide, yet weirdly unsexy grip, both in angle and furniture.

In boardwalk empire Jimmy Darmody used an early long-slide Colt. One of these or a 1902? The pistol is so smooth and clean, it wasn't any form of 1911. I think one may have been used by another couple characters. The long profile conveys a great cinematic threat.

@zoiders

Browning was genius with basic mechanical priciples but by Christ were his ergonomics and workflow ideas a bit lacking to say the least. Something clearly changed with his designs between this and the final 1911? so did he employ someone with a bit more artistry and feel for design language to help him? Or did he seek enlightenment from contemporaries in art and architecture? The contrast is stark and I want to know why.
