I use to dance when I was a kid because my mom thought I was too “fidgeting” and dancing provides an effective energy and expression outlet.
For many years, I have been hearing a voice inside 🎶”Jiani, please dance again!” I kept ignoring it, because “I have been too busy” or “it sounds so unprofessional and childish” or “Who am I to dance ? “
This year, the more I resist the voice the stronger it gets.
Finally, I listened to the voice and started to dance under the guidance of a dancing friend.
7 months later, with some first hand experiences, I am now reflecting on this and sharing it with you in case your inner dancer is calling you to do the same. ✨
During dance meditation, there is no specific choreography to follow, it is just music, me, and the space.
Listening to the body and move without thinking or judgement is the key.
When I tried to set a goal and say, “hey let me weave in this particular gesture into the movement” I felt the stress and end up not fully immersed in the moment.
When I just let the music lead the body, new moves emerge unexpectedly.
I become the joyful dancer and observer at the same time, not only seeing myself moving with the music in space, I also feel the somatic element, the increased heart rates, the sweat, the soft touch of the wooden floor, the gentle flow of the wind as I move…
It is a Flow State through movement. Being anchored with fluidity in the moment is deep healing.
In this dance meditation, I don’t have to sit still or put on a particular posture, what I do is simple, just move with the body through music.
Move gracefully when music is peaceful, move unapologetically fiercely when music is wild, move like a shaman when music is mystically and motherly earthy. 🌍
If you are curious about this experience, I invite you to give a try. Find a safe and open space in your home (dim the light) or the garden, put on your fav music and let your body be your guide. 💜✨
